DETROIT (Reuters) - General Motors Co confirmed on Wednesday it will build a luxury electric car based on the technology used in its Volt plug-in hybrid for Cadillac as the automaker also studies plans for an all-electric small car for its mainstream Chevrolet brand.
GM did not disclose the timing for production of the battery-powered Cadillac dubbed the ELR, but people familiar with the plans said the plug-in hybrid will be built in 2013 as a 2014 model.
The sources asked not to be identified because details of the rollout of GM's first luxury electric car have not been announced.
The news comes at a time when Toyota Motor Corp has begun marketing its 2012 Prius plug-in hybrid, a competitor to the Chevrolet Volt. A plug-in Cadillac would be a rival to the $97,000 Karma hybrid sedan that Fisker Automotive is rolling out as a 2012 model.

Perhaps Obama will see the parallel someday, but I won't hold my breath.
It is a class issue.
“General Motors Co confirmed on Wednesday it will build a luxury electric car based on the technology used in its Volt plug-in hybrid for Cadillac...”
They had better hope that the wedding reception is really close to the church...
I guess I already own my last Cadillac.
“There’s not much difference between conspicuous consumption and conspicuous conservation.”
Excellent observation!
An electric Caddie will be just as successful as the Chevy Dolt and Nissan Leaf. I’m sure potential buyers will be standing in line at dealers at the very mention of a new electric vehicle. (heavy sarcasm)
Two years (max) after OBozo is gone (like 2014), GM is going to be in ‘heap deep doodoo!’
Truly this proves a couple things:
1. Liberalism is a mental disorder.
2. Obama has promised the Teamsters/Auto union and the GM CEO he will mandate some stuff dictator-wise and via EPA. They have to have some insider information we don’t have.
They are only doing this because of the fabulous success of their Volt cars.
I think they have sold 4,000 of them already and most of them went to the government.
Meanwhile Ford keeps building and selling th F-150.
Passed a Volt on I-10 last week. It was making all of 55 in the 80 mph zone. And it was a long way to an electrical outlet.

Meanwhile:
2011 Lexus CT 200h
Starting MSRP $29,120$30,900
MPG City: 43 Highway: 40
98-hp, 1.8-liter I-4 (gas hybrid).
When you can buy three green-tech Lexus’ for the same money, this is likely to sink like a stone.
I hope all the UAW Brothers will appreciate it when Obama gets booted out of office, GM has nothing but unsellable electric clown cars in their inventory, and they all go on unemployment as GM joins Studebaker and AMC on the ash heap of history.
Actually with a normal full tank of gas the Volt can run over 380 miles before filling up. It is too bad that the Left has deified and the Right (Limbaugh) has demonized this vehicle. It is really a great platform and probably the wave of the automotive future. Should it be subsidized, no, but it really is a nice vehicle The problem is that GM can’t sell them for what it cost to build them and make a profit, that may be less of a problem for Cadillac.
“I've cut it off twice, and IT'S STILL TOO SHORT!”
And never forget his stupid line where he said, “I am digging us out of this hole we're in.” (He actually believes this.....)
Actually, GM is a corrupt organization that ripped off its bond holders for billions of dollars in violation of bankruptcy law, contract law, and centuries of common law. There is no way is the world that I will ever buy a GM product again. As for the Volt, I drove one, and it had all the quality of a Yugo but at a Cadillac price. To sell a Cadillac EV at a Lexus/Mercedes price? I have serious doubts that they will sell as well as the failed Volt. As for anyone who buys one, I would think less of a person who bought a post-Bailout GM product, and those who can afford this latest BigGovernmentMotorsAuto know that their productive peers would not admire them for the purchase.
The automaker that embraces the MYT engine will transform America and MAKE A FORTUNE....

The Volt may be a nice platform, but it is really not a viable “electric car” as it is marketed; it is not economically viable unless subsidized, and doesn’t hold a candle to the Prius or even to more traditional vehicles like the VW or Audi TDI’s.
