Controversial Immigration Enforcement Program Is Target Of Lively Protest August 15, 2011 |
Hundreds gathered in Los Angeles on Monday night for a chance to address a federal task force that will propose changes to a controversial immigration enforcement program.
Speaker after speaker at the lively meeting denounced the Secure Communities program, with most not calling for changes but for the program to end entirely.
Im here asking the government to end this Secure Communities program, said Blanca Perez, an undocumented worker who was arrested for selling ice cream from a cart on the street and then placed into deportation proceedings. I am not a criminal, nor am I a bad person. I am simply a person who wants to work.
Dozens walked out of the hearing at St. Anne's Residential Facility, shouting terminate the program! and calling on task force members to resign.
The task force was formed in response to growing criticism of the Department of Homeland Security enforcement program, which shares fingerprints collected by state and local police to help immigration authorities identify and deport tens of thousands of people each year.
The program, which was touted as a way to identify and deport convicted felons, has been criticized for also ensnaring minor offenders, victims of domestic abuse and other crimes, as well as witnesses to crimes and people who were arrested but not convicted of offenses.

That sums it up. They come here illegally then demand we change our laws for them.
Only in America.
Blanca Perez, an undocumented worker who was arrested for selling ice cream from a cart on the street and then placed into deportation proceedings. I am not a criminal, nor am I a bad person. I am simply a person who wants to work.Fine, show your green card, SS number in YOUR name and tax returns for your earnings.
I hate the ploy they use of saying they “simply” or “just” want to work which is supposed to negate the fact that they’re illegals. I always say, I understand, I just want you to follow our laws or I simply want to be fair to American citizens and those that are following our laws to come here legally.
If you are here illegally, then YOU ARE a criminal. Looks like she didn't have a license to sell that ice cream, either? Lawbreaker x 2.
Yes they are here illegally and that is all that should matter. The fact is they are not all here to work anyway...some are here to get on all the programs they can and some are here to be criminals. I doubt those that come here to take advantage of all our freebies or deal drugs or what have you would admit that.
Of course the pandering politicians will not want any program which makes life harder for people living here illegally. And of course if you find an illegal alien, they’re going to be against it. Did the LA Times reporters think through this basic fact? It’s like asking people selling pot whether the federal laws on pot are fair or not...
Cry me a river the size of the Rio Grande!
Breakin ‘da Law!
I heard that argument on a talk show Monday: Republicans are weak on immigration but Obama's is strong.
Sounds like a bunch of the special privileged Perry crowd.
Illegal aliens are not illegal aliens..
They are..... INSURGENTS... Mexican citizens that want to remain mexican citizens..
With no clue or desire to become Americans..

But then again, the Leftwing media knows that if you repeat a lie enough the truth becomes lost.
“Every day I live the nightmare of this program,” said Blanca Perez, 38, who said she was arrested in February for street vending without a permit. “Now I am facing deportation for the simple act of selling ice cream in the street.”
Uhm, Ms. Perez, you’re facing deportation because you sneaked into another country without going through the proper channels. The selling ice cream without a permit is just the method we caught you by. Sort of like how Al Capone got sent to prison for tax evasion, not the prostitution, gambling, booze, murder, etc.

Now the real story..Blanca Perez knows this first hand.
She was arrested Feb. 7 for selling ice cream outside Van Nuys Elementary School.
The City of Los Angeles Municipal Code prohibits vendors from selling items within 500 feet of the nearest property line of any school.
Sgt. Ray Puettmann of the Van Nuys Station said he was not aware of any organized operations of street vendors, but acknowledged that one of their lead officers is enforcing this ordinance because of complaints from neighbors and school officials.
It is against the law to sell around the schools, he noted.
Perez said she knew this, but as with other ice cream vendors interviewed, she also said that the area around schools present the biggest selling areas.
Thats where we can sell a little bit more because of the children, she said.
Perez was detained with two other people who were selling hotdogs and corn. She said the hotdog vendor has already been deported, while the corn vendor was released on bail.
After being held at the Van Nuys jail, Perez was sent to the Womens Detention Center in Lynwood where she told authorities she was in the country illegally and was referred to the Immigration Detention Center in Santa Ana.
Authorities let her go after she pleaded with them on behalf of her 10-month-old son, whom she had left with a babysitter. Shes now provisionally freed, but must wear an electronic monitor on her ankle, which, she said, embarrasses her.
I didnt commit any crime to be having to wear this, she said. She is currently awaiting an immigration court date and ponders her future. Perez came to the United States from Mexico with high hopes for a better future.
