Perry '01 - 'Fox's vision for an open border is a vision I embrace'
The Washington Times ^ | June 21, 2011 | Kerry Picket

Posted on 08/13/2011 6:23:25 PM PDT by Do Not Make Fun Of His Ears

Texas Governor Rick Perry, Republican, reportedly being pushed by Texas lawmakers to throw his hat into the GOP presidential ring, very often touts his background on border security, but what about the Mr. Perry's past remarks and actions about immigration and the border? He is currently supporting a bill that was just passed by the Texas Senate that would give greater power to police officers to question those who are detained about their legal status. The AP reports:

The 19-12 vote early Wednesday came after nearly eight hours of emotional debate in which Democrats railed against the bill as racist and a tool to harass Latinos.

The bill pushed by Republican Gov. Rick Perry now goes to the House for consideration, where it is expected to easily pass. The Republican super-majority in the House passed a similar version during the regular session.

Perry and supporters say the bill will help police fight crime committed by illegal immigrants. But opponents, including law enforcement chiefs in the state's largest cities and immigrant rights activists, say the measure will allow rogue officers to target Hispanics.

However, Governor Perry appeared to be talking differently about the border when he first came to office. In a 2001 Border Summit speech, Governor Perry described to fellow border governors and others in attendance the amount of poverty :

"President Fox’s vision for an open border is a vision I embrace, as long as we demonstrate the will to address the obstacles to it. An open border means poverty has given way to opportunity, and Mexico’s citizens do not feel compelled to cross the border to find that opportunity. It means we have addressed pollution concerns, made substantial progress in stopping the spread of disease, and rid our crossings of illicit drug smuggling activity."

This is typical Perry. Talks tough before elections (hence the current sanctuary city blathering) but once he’s safely in office it’s a quick backslide into liberalism. He’s a hold your finger up to see which way the wind is blowing that day kind of politician. After nearly 30 years in politics, he’s got it down good.

i don’t mind an open border either.
as long as there are no benefits at taxpayer expense.

if a military man applies to bring a foreign wife here,
he has to show he can support her,
and swear she won’t be a burden on the state.

i want one set of rules, in both cases.

Perry will be the Republican nominee. Obama and the dems will define him as another GWB.

"We must say to every Texas child learning in a Texas classroom, "We don’t care where you come from, but where you are going, and we are going to do everything we can to help you get there." And that vision must include the children of undocumented workers. That’s why Texas took the national lead in allowing such deserving young minds to attend a Texas college at a resident rate. Those young minds are a part of a new generation of leaders[;] the doors of higher education must be open to them. The message is simple: educacion es el futuro, y si se puede [education is the future, and yes, we can]."

Nice of him to use the ACORN/SEIU slogan on the end there.

"An open border means ....we have addressed pollution concerns, made substantial progress in stopping the spread of disease, and rid our crossings of illicit drug smuggling activity."

The way to address border pollution (waste left behind by illegal border crossers), the spread of 3rd world disease, and drug smuggling is to CLOSE the border, not open it. These quotes by Perry will come back to haunt.

Obama and the dems will define him as another GWB.

By Nov 2012, most voters will remember 2008 as the "good old days". Baraq loses in a landslide.

What you just said makes me think of John McCain. I am sorry, we don’t need another McCain and while I like Bush 43, we don’t need another Bush clone. Go home, Perry! We don’t need you!

"As the governor has continued to say, in Texas, we have a shared interest with our counterparts in Mexico to securing the international border between our countries in order to protect our citizens and the legitimate cross border trade and travel that will help bring jobs to each of our economies. Gov. Perry will continue to urge the federal government to secure the international border from the growing threat of drug cartels in northern Mexico."

He is clearly FOR securing the border.

He is promoting the same kind of friendly neighborhood trade with Mexico, as we have with Canada, but clearly makes it all contingent on securing the border.

Immigration isn’t only about money, it is about culture and assimilation, allowing Mexico to live here only turns us into a colonized Mexican territory.

Don't know enough about him to answer that. I'm still pulling for somebody closer to a Tea Party candidate.

An observation:

Full disclosure I support another (not yet) candidate. But all these sudden Perry-bashing articles from the way back machine, seem sort of like what dems would do.

You know. Saul Alinsky.

Just saying. How about we do things differently here?...

IOW -- he is telling Fox to get his act together and get the Mexican economy going, so the Mexicans won't leave Mexico to come to the US in search of a better life, that the "open border" is contingent on not having hordes of people from Mexico coming here illegally.

Perry-bashing articles from the way back machine

June 21, 2011. Less than two months ago. Hardly "way back machine" material.
