The strange saga of anti-sanctuary cities legislation in the 82nd session amplified the sharp dissonance around immigration politics inside the Texas Republican Party.
The essence of the problem is the conflict between conservative Republican voters with intense preferences for restrictions on immigrants and immigration, on one hand, and the much more pragmatic positions of key Republican leaders, elected officials, and business interests in the state on the other.
Gov. Rick Perry, as the leader of the party, has maneuvered through this conflict with mixed results. Whatever his place in the party and his political future, the problem is built into the coalition of interests in the Texas GOP.

Admin,
Can you please correct the title. Should be “Perry Walks A Fine Line On Immigration In Texas”
If Perry signed a pledge agreeing to NEVER sign amnesty legislation as POTUS... AND to seal the Mezzican border with
US Army units..... then and only then would I vote for him.
Otherwise..... I say.. Adios Mofo! to Rick Perry.
He could have muscled through the sanctuary city bill, that was in the legislative special session, but instead he caved to big Texas Republican Party donors, like Charles Butts of HEB Food stores, who want open borders.
Big business in Texas likes the taxpayers here subsidizing the education and health care costs for all their illegal slime employees.
Because when owning two mansions is just not enough, you
have to employ a bunch of cheap labor illegals so that you
can have three and a yacht too.
By the way... google Adios Mofo!. Its pretty funny.

What BS.
The ‘problem’ is this: to enforce the laws of this nation, or choose anarchy.
Whether the laws are going to be enforced, or those with money buying politicians to look the other way FOR WHATEVER REASON, this is the true crux of our illegal alien invasion.
Those who want illegal aliens allowed into our nation can be of either party - their reasons may differ greatly but the result, political and moral corruption, is the same.
Updated: The Sanctuary Cities Blame Game
“Gov. Rick Perry has released a statement blaming Sen. Robert Duncan, R-Lubbock, for the death of sanctuary cities, which the governor added to the special session call. House Speaker Joe Straus has his own statement blaming the full Senate. And this morning, Senate Republicans and Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst came to Duncan’s âand their own â defense, releasing a statement turning the blame around on the House.
“The Senate passed SB 9, the sanctuary cities bill, with unanimous Republican support two weeks ago, and nothing has happened,” Dewhurst said in a statement. “If the House really wants to pass sanctuary cities, they should pass it today.”
Perry did everything he could. Of all the people to blame, he is not one of them.
“The problem is this: to enforce the laws of this nation, or choose anarchy.”
Perry ENCOURAGES law breaking by providing welfare and college tuition to illegal aliens.

Gov. Rick Perry of Texas is NO conservative Republican. He is George Bush redux.
