Laura Johnson, the university student accused of looting during the riots, could be thrown off her degree course.
The 19 year-old, who is studying English and Italian at Exeter University, appeared at Bexleyheath magistrates’ court on Wednesday charged with theft after police stopped her car and found £5,000 of electrical items, allegedly looted from a branch of Currys in Charlton, south-east London. Exeter University has warned Miss Johnson, whose parents are company directors, that she could be thrown off her course if she is convicted.
A spokesman for the university said: “We will await the outcome of the court case.” But a source admitted the matter was being taken seriously and an investigation was under way.
Last night, school friends from St Olave’s in Orpington, a leading state school, expressed their shock at the arrest of the straight-A student. They said she had not shown signs of going off the rails.

For all the non white faces in the pix (and yes there were whites rioting for sure) there seem to be fewer stories like this about the arrested having darker skin. Read 3 stories about average to wealthy white people and 1 with a black person who was from a wealthy family (the Olympic chick). Strange that. Am I just missing them or is there an effort to avoid picturing the poor and downtrodden of ANY color?
