They can’t afford not to host the 2012 Olympics, since it will bring in tourists and therefore $$

Yes that economic model has worked so well in previous olympics like Greece, Montreal, etc. < /massive sarcasm>

I seem to remember that hosting the olympics always costs considerably more that it generates. What it does however is give an open pipeline from the taxpayers' wallets to the olympic committee and those contractors and locals who are connected to the event. Sort of like taxes - impoverish all a moderate amount and enrich a few a very great deal. It also gives local politicians some great "free" entertainment again at others' expense.

who deliberately capitalise on key grievances of the ‘underclass’ & add fuel to fires. They also try to empower & radicalise the youth.

These people are called "community organizers."

Making a ‘profit’ immediately during the Olympics was neither stated nor implied.

However, they’ve already made a considerable investment (cost) in building venues, and making related preparations - that’s understood by any model. They will & need to recoup some of the cost, if not break.

Some of the cost will be recouped by, actually, hosting the Olympics & by attracting visitors during the Olympics. Depending on how successfully the Olympics are managed & by association the UK itself is marketed, there is usually a very good chance of repeat visits by tourists to England, if not solely to London. Usually, a period of 12 to 18 months, immediately following the actual event, is projected for repeat visits. And/Or, first time visits for those who watched the event elsewhere but weren’t present in the country. In fact, they could well make a profit over time.

Any money that is brought into the country is a positive, provided it is spent well and/or well re-invested in & for the country.

Naturally, contractors and locals connected to the event will benefit from the $$$, just as hotels, restaurants, stores, and other tourism related industries within the broader sector. I anticipate the media & Telcos will be the other contributors. The former for the exclusive rights to broadcast the event.

Besides, I can’t think of 2 better opportunities for some much required positive PR for the UK in coming months than the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations & the Olympics. Can you?

You are right, some of the Anarchist grps could well be “community organisers” too.

Supposedly the royal wedding was supposed to generate a huge amount of revenue, but it didn’t. It was heard that it actually hurt the economy since the stores were clsoed and people missed work and the places that were closed missed sales and customers.
