Tens of thousands of people have called for convicted rioters and looters to lose their benefits saying they show a disregard for the country that provides for them.
An online petition at epetitions.direct.gov.uk demands welfare-dependent rioters convicted of offences linked to the recent disorder should surrender their state handouts.
More than 83,000 people have signed the e-petition so far but it has proved so popular the government site hosting it has crashed under the strain.
Started by Stephen Mains yesterday it states: 'Any persons convicted of criminal acts during the current London riots should have all financial benefits removed.
'No tax payer should have to contribute to those who have destroyed property, stolen from their community and shown a disregard for the country that provides for them.'
If 100,000 people sign the petition, it would trigger a process that could end with MPs voting on the plan.

Yeah, that'll show 'em!
Well, Obama is welfare dependent. Can we ger rid of him?
This is a good idea. Bite the hand that feeds you, then take away the food. We should do this here.
Well, can they at least keep their new looted TV?
A great idea- and one that the states, here, should consider. That and serious jail time might be part of the answer.
I am amazed by young people rioting because they are “poor”. Time to dust off old ideas like “shame” and “public humiliation”.
Oh the Humanity!!
We demands our rights!
Something tells me the West has lost their killer instinct. I just can’t put my finger on it.
Why limit it to the current situation? It should include any future rioting also.
One must suppose it would be too old-fashioned to hang them all from lamp posts.
Sigh.
And judging by the limp-wristed response of the British police and British politicians, there will be future rioting too.
There has always been a tried-and-true historical response to the looter.
But the Britain of today will NEVER apply it.
R.I.P.
The people may want it, but the politicians will never let it happen.
>>I am amazed by young people rioting because they are poor.<<
.
When the “poor” destroy the property of the “rich”, the “poor” become “rich”?
Right on.
The Britain of today is multicultural. Only homogeneous societies will survive.
Loss of benefits for life is a good starting point. Immigrants should be deported to their country of origin and banned from entry into the UK for life. Penal colonies were popular in the past. There may be room in Antarctica or Zimbabwe. They can experience “poor” first hand.
If this truly is the goal, then capital punishment is the answer.
Some small part of the evictees might get jobs, which would be mostly low paying.
Some larger part might become “homeless” and become the kind of problem homeless people can be.
A still large part would turn to crime full time and impose a cost to the country as they walk around free or as they are imprisoned.
Again, I'm not saying don't evict them, I'm saying consider the unintended consequences and be prepared to deal with them.
As I was watching the rioting, I noticed that the police were not really clubbing the rioters. Instead they would run up to the rioters and then hold the line without actually going after them in earnest. I noticed the same thing during the Greek riots. The police are getting orders to go easy on the little darlings.
