London rioters: 'Showing the rich we do what we want'

Two girls who took part in Monday night's riots in Croydon have boasted that they were showing police and "the rich" that "we can do what we want". The pair who were drinking wine looted from a local shop at 09:30 BST on Tuesday morning, spoke to the BBC's Leana Hosea. Croydon was one of several areas plagued by unrest on Monday night, on a third night of riots in the capital. There were also violent scenes in several other English cities.

I wonder how much their pecking order of society plays into this whole thing for the have nots? I had a friend who went to Harvard Business School and many of his classmates did not associate with him because they were Brits and he was from the wrong side of the tracks.

I would bet most of those small business owners are not rich. A lot of them did appear to be Middle Eastern, though. Perhaps they will reconsider making their homes in London.

This is the exact same problem with some apartment dwellers that think they are sticking it to the owner by trashing out the home where they live, damaging the equipment in the laundry room, etc.

They end up living in squalor while the owner lives in a nice home in another part of town, and still collects the same rent from them.

I have been to London twice and most recently this Spring. Most of the “rich business owners” I saw were either Indian or Muslim. This might be what is really happening—a protest against Asians.

Interesting thought.

As Americans we don't really understand how much of the old system of social stratification, and the concept of bloodlines still plays in Great Britain.

However, deploying the term “rich” doesn't quite support that thesis. I would think the $hit disturbers would use different adjectives if this wasn't just an excuse for plain old hatred and criminality.
