Many of the “youths” are armed with machetes. You’d be surprised at how quickly a machete can turn a horse from an asset into a liability.
Also, no, they’re not spontaneous. They’re organized in “flash mob” fashion not on twitter but on the Blackberry network of all things. One of the papers has even seen the schedule of where and when they’ll be on Friday night.
If they are armed with machetes, then the police should open fire with sidearms!
If feel so bad for the civilians who have had to surrender to these thugs, while the police exercise very poor judgment in the feeble attempts to suppress the violence.
