NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A former New Orleans councilwoman connected to a corruption-tainted ex-Louisiana congressman has been convicted of conspiring to loot more than $1 million from charities run with taxpayer money.

Federal jurors on Monday convicted 56-year-old Renee Gill Pratt of one count of racketeering and she faces up to 20 years in prison when sentenced Oct. 26.

Jefferson was convicted in 2009 on corruption charges over his African business ties. He’s free pending appeals.

Gill Pratt insisted Monday that she is innocent. She is free until sentencing.

Prosecutors say she and Jefferson family members used charity money for themselves. William Jefferson was not charged in the case.

They can’t put you in prison if you “insist that you are innocent,” can they?

“...convicted of conspiring to loot more than $1 million from charities run with taxpayer money.”

What’s the point of taxes if the politicians can’t loot?

Pratt's decision not to testify marks a sharp and mysterious departure from her prior conspiracy trial for allegedly steering hundreds of thousands of dollars to members of the fabled Jefferson political family. Last time, she won a mistrial after swearing she didn't know what Mose Jefferson, her "very secretive" boyfriend of two decades, and his relatives were up to, and arguing that she wasn't obligated to investigate.

She knows him for 20 years and had no clue what he was up to? Yeah, right.

Well it's not like it was a charity-charity.

I mean the money was just sitting there for the taking by a normal Naw'Lins Rat politician.

How could she possibly resist free money.

I sure hope one of these days, the tables will be turned and these felon democRATS will get what they deserve. I’m tired of democRATS getting away with crime.

However we’re going to need some really big balls with a lots of guts to get that done and I have my doubts.
