Bronx man interrupts church Mass to rip 'racist' principal, gets kicked out and arrested

Shock over an outspoken Catholic school principal's ties to a white supremacist group turned ugly during Sunday Mass at a Bronx church.

Cops were called to Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Fordham after a church-goer interrupted the service to call for the removal of Frank Borzellieri as principal of the parish school.

"I wanted them to feel my sense of outrage that he was brought into the community to teach," said Juan Varela, 54, who was arrested yesterday on disorderly conduct and weapons possession charges and spent seven hours in police custody.

Varela, who is Catholic but lives in Queens, said he sat in a pew during the 10 a.m. Mass. At one point he stood up, walked to the altar, faced parishioners and began railing against Borzellieri.

"This church hired a racist. This church does not like Hispanics and blacks," one police source quoted Varela as saying.

Cops said he initially refused to leave, but finally complied. He said he was kicked from behind by ushers at the back of the church as he tried to exit.

He was picked up by police about two blocks away. Varela was charged with criminal possession of a weapon - a knife - and disorderly conduct, cops said.

The News revealed Sunday that Borzellieri, 48, was quietly hired two years ago as principal of Our Lady of Mount Carmel School despite his controversial writings. In his 2004 book - "Don't Take it Personally: Race, Immigration, Crime and Other Heresies" - Borzellieri declared "diversity is a weakness" and that America's rising black and Hispanic populations will lead to a "New Dark Age." He has also written for the white supremacist publication American Renaissance.

As a city school board member representing District 24 in Queens from 1993 to 2002, Borzellieri tried to ban literature he labeled "anti-American" from school libraries. One of the books he targeted was an biography on the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

He also introduced a resolution calling for students to be taught that U.S. culture is superior, and he advocated the removal of an openly gay teacher from the classroom at Public School 199 in Sunnyside.

Liberals only advocate for speech they agree with. The three writers it took to write this article for the Daily News couldn't help themselves and slipped these two "crimes" in at the end. If the purpose of education is truth, all American students should be taught the superiority of American culture. I challenge these three writers to name a culture above ours, that has saved the world several times at great sacrifice, and guarantees free speech for this kind of drivel.

And gay marriage may be legal in NY, but there is nothing wrong with Catholic school principals having a problem with teachers whose lifestyles directly oppose the teachings of the Catholic Church. Once in a while the News finds itself unable to resist a story before checking all the facts.

This article makes me wonder what was in that "banned" MLK book (in the end it wasn't, BTW), and if there are others that weren't targeted.

Do you know anything about “American Renaissance”? Is it what is claimed in your opinion? I don’t trust a thing the NY Daily News says.

This guy Varela probably doesn’t even vaguely know the principal.

Now I am curious about American Renaissance—never heard about it before. See, when you give press to something-it makes folks all the more curious. I bet they are getting a lot of hits.

What’s he doing in a church on Fordham Rd, The Bronx when he lives in Queens - that isn’t his parish. He’s not even in the right borough.

I forgot to add that a Catholic who interrupts the Sacrament of the Eucharist for political reasons immediately excommunicates himself and is no longer a Catholic. The Daily News would have been correct to say "Varela, who identifies himself as a Catholic..."

The MSM (and especially the Daily News) has an axe for Catholicism. It got what it wanted here. Catholics believe that a miracle occurs at every Mass, and Jesus Christ is not just present spiritually, but physically in the Church. The News does not have to agree with this belief, for them to ignore it is textbook hypocrisy.

Are you talking to me, or the three writers? See the first thread on this story for more info on American Renaissance.

great points!

and i’ll wager, that his minority students, are doing a lot better than most in public schools, where teachers belong to La Raza and NAACP without complaints...

” A firebrand educator with ties to a white supremacist group is running a Bronx Catholic school where most of the students are black and Latino, “

Maenwhile there is no outrage about how the multicultural, pro gay, anti US curriculum has turned our schools from being top tier to complete wastes of money.

The school system needs 1000 more Principals like Borzellieri.

Now that I reread it, I can see why you thought that - so I should have been more specific.

I’ve occasionally read some articles there. Somebody who finds AmRen intolerably racist would find FR intolerably racist too.

It's unlikely that the catholic school would have hired him if he didn't have a record of producing results, and unlikely they will keep him if the scores don't rise.

People pay tuition to send their kids to Catholic school in large part because they want a superior education for their kids.

Varela, who is Catholic

Either he is Catholic, or he is a person who interrupts Masses.

The reporter should pick one or the other.
