Texas ranks near the bottom in government spending per citizen, and it relies on federal money much less than many other state

I thought Perry was a big-government, compassionate conservative like George W. Bush. Have some here been lying?

All I can say is, when the sh!t hits the fan don’t even think about bringing your liberal ignorance down here. We have enough of that socialist/liberal crap in Austin as it is!

Right now Texas and Oklahoma are pretty well scorched.

We are not much better here in Penna, most lawns are yellow here, we haven't had rain, except for maybe a 5 minute shower here and there, for a long time, my allergies are kicking up because of it.

Only when it's convenient for their preferred candidate.

It used to be true, but during his historic governorship, Perry has reinvented the office as a power center. This may be his greatest accomplishment.

Why are you trying to make that sound like a good thing? Do we really think the accummulation of power into one person is a good thing? No.

Actually, Perry’s tax rates simply moved taxes around and were basically net neutral. Taxe increases were neutralized by other tax decreases like state property taxes. It made the burden be carried by non-property owners as well.

As far as the debt doubling, that’s because of unfunded mandates from the feds and high transportation costs the last two years.

but nine governments within Texas, including Dallas, Bexar, Tarrant and Travis counties, could lose their AAA rating in the event of a federal default.
Let's see. That's basically San Antonio, Dallas, Ft. Worth, and Austin. Wonder why?

Weak in reaction to the strong Republican governors of Reconstruction day. Until about thirty years ago, governers served two-year terms. The other executive offices were mainly elective. By reigning so long, Perry has managed get his friends in all the boards etc.

Austin is a blue city and the other major cities are trending Democratic.

That was my thought. Shining examples of the effects of spending? Notice that neither Houston nor Harris county was on the list.

They are, but it seems for different reasons. Houston has been gaining people within the city limits, and while a lot came from Katrina, there are still quite a bit of old oil patch golden triangle dems.

For Dallas, the city is not very large geographically, and people have been leaving to the suburbs for a while. Here in Frisco, we are just over 100k. 10 years ago, Frisco had 10k. The old Plano, Richardson, and Garland suburbs have been trending to Wylie, Allen, McKinney, and Frisco now. There is a reason they wanted 121 to be a toll road. But those moving into the suburbs have been voting fairly conservative, so while Dallas gets smaller and bluer, the suburbs get larger and redder.

I dont know much about San Antonio

Just went on a trip to Mt. Fuji yesterday with 1 Japanese, and 8 Filipinos..

One of the Filipinas, told me how ‘awful’ Texas was when she visited her friends in Texas last year.
(I aslo asked her if she had any clue about how big Texas was and how many cities/towns Texas had... she said,Isn’t it like the 8th biggest state?”... X(
I told her No, it is the SECOND biggest state.. she argued with me for a couple more minutes about whether Texas was ‘really that big’.... some people you can’t convince of anything.. even if you are FROM that said state :p )

I asked her WHAT she was talking about.. she said that ALL of the KKK and racists (Repub) were in Texas.. I was speechless for a min or 2.. (I was like, “wtf”!?!) ..

I then asked her WHERE her friends were living.. she answered, “Houston”... lol.. I spent the next 10 minutes trying to explain to her about the demographics there.. she still argued.. and then I mentioned about the N.O. peeps being directed there after Katrina.. she still didn’t bite .. :p

I THEN tried to explain how things work (KKK is Democrap, etc..) .. she was braindead (moonbat brainwashed from LSM .. and too old to understand anyway :/)..

I gave up and asked her friend to keep her away from me (on the bus)..

was a great trip, except for her not having a clue.. :p

Legislators here meat two months every two years.

Actually, that's incorrect. The Texas Legislature meets for 140 days beginning the 2nd Tuesday in January every two years. Special sessions may be called as needed which extend the regular session by 30 days.

Pretty sure it was two months back when I studied Texas government. But that was a long time ago.

Do they still get $8,500 a year?

Texas state legislators are paid $7,200 per year plus a $128 per diem allowance for every day the legislature is in session (both the regular 140-day session every two years and special sessions).

(2yrs x $7200) + (140days x $128) = $32,320 per two years, or an annual average of $16,160

Dallas gave up on the idea of annexation and has become sort of land-locked. Houston kept growing. As for me I can remember when Lewisville and Plano and Allen were small farming communbities. Came back thirty years later and things were quite different. Back in the ‘60s went to a party at a housing on the edge of Richardson. Across the chain-link fence was a huge field at least a mile wide. Lights to the west. Today if I could find that exact house again it is deep inside suburbia. Richardson was pretty tony then. Not any more.

No. but not such much. Reminding me of a story. When I was at UT in Austin, I spoke to a state senator, a cowman from the Hill Country. imentioned that they should pay the legislators more to keep them honest. He kind of smiled and then drawled that whether you pay them nothing or a million a year, they are going to take money from lobbyists, not because they are crooks but because they want to feel important. He actually said that more colorfully, in a lot fewer words, but obviously the thought stuck in my mind.

Remember back in the 80s when the owner of Pilgrim’s Pride chicken was on the house floor handing out checks? And it was legal.

Most of legislators become lobbyests (sp) when they leave office.
