Arctic fires could have climate impact

WOODS HOLE, Mass -- A dramatic loss of carbon in a 2007 wildfire on Alaska's North Slope could have a profound impact on possible climate change, U.S. researchers say.

Woods Hole Institute scientist Goiter Shaver and colleagues say the blaze on the slopes of Alaska's Brooks Mountain Range released 20 times more carbon into the atmosphere than what is annually lost from undisturbed tundra.

An increase in the frequency and size of wildfires in the region may release large amounts of the greenhouse gas CO2 to the atmosphere and accelerate the transformation of the frozen, treeless tundra of today into a different kind of ecosystem less capable of storing carbon, researchers said. This could have profound implications for atmospheric carbon and climate, a Woods Hole release said Thursday.

How does a tundra fire compare to wildfires in California, Texas, etc? My guess would be far less carbon released.

Good thing that toxic greenhouse gas spewing shuttle is grounded for good.

A forest fire "profoundly" changes the world's climate?

Who woulda thought? Oh wait, I forgot --everything changes the climate. That's why we have to raise taxes, pay $8.00 for gasoline, and let the govt run our lives. Our survival depends on it!!!!

Sorry to say, but this kind of environmental BS wins Nobel prizes.

And yet they tell us that the coal-fired power plants in China, which release tons of CO2, actually REDUCED global warming over the past three years.

Don’t you understand? COMMUNIST technology always benefits the earth. It’s the capitalist pigs that screw up everything.

Anyone who still subsribes to the quackery of CO2 being responsible for Global Warming/Climate Change should be tied to a chair and forced to watch the GREAT GLOBAL WARMING SWINDLE! Simply said, there is NO scientific proof that CO2 levels have ever had anything to do with the Earth’s changing atmosphere. In fact, the documentary is a MUST WATCH for all and is free on You Tube. I teach high school history and after my science department showed the students Al Gore’s debacle, I showed them the GREAT GLOBAL WARMING SWINDLE. After all, as educators, we’re supposed to get the students to think, not to tell them what to think.

Damned carbon!

We're all gonna die.
When we quit exhaling CO2.

One “scientist” has been laid off for lying about bears. It is time that these wild stories should provide some verification for their wild theories.

But but but ... wildfires happen naturally.
There have been fires long before humans discovered how to use it for warmth and cooking.
It's Gaia's way of renewing a dried-out or overgrown area.

Maybe it’s like those miraculous Chinese coal power plants, which COOL the earth so the communists can use coal and we can’t.
