Texas Gov. Rick Perry eyes Florida talent, money in possible presidential bid

Texas Gov. Rick Perry is exploring a run for president in a behind-the-scenes effort to set up a shadow campaign that stretches from Austin to New Hampshire to Miami.

Perry’s potential bid is more of a whisper campaign than a presidential campaign at the moment, but he’s aggressively courting fundraisers and political consultants – even if they’re allied with other candidates.

[snip]

This week, Perry is meeting with delegations from Tennessee, Georgia and Arkansas and has recently travelled to California and Aspen, Colo. in well-publicized visits that are all preludes to a nationwide campaign.

Perry has already fired up rank-and-file Republicans, according to a new survey from American Research Group, which found that he leads the pack of any Republican contender for president by pulling with 16 percent.

That’s essentially a statistical tie with Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, and Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann, who each pull in 15 percent of the vote.

...Pollster Dick Bennett said Perry’s numbers “surprised” him because the Texas governor polled at the bottom of the pack in South Carolina, New Hampshire and Iowa. But nationwide, he’s surging.

“Perry has raced up in the national polls, so something’s happening. I think that the race is unsettled,” Bennett said. “It’s very fluid.”

Bennett said his poll also shows that Romney’s support is starting to decline in Florida....

Carney, his political adviser for 14 years, said he’s gathering potential donor information....

Perry will likely declare well before the Sept. 24 Republican Party of Florida straw poll, Carney said. Will Perry participate in the straw poll – which Romney has refused to do? Carney said that decision will be left up to the Florida staff, if Perry decides to run, of course.

“You have to take Florida seriously,” Carney said.

A Perry/Rubio ticket would be the “gold standard” in my opinion. Rubio has got to be the VP choice for anyone at the top of the ticket. It’s a no brainer.

To be honest, I was all ready to send Rick Perry a check when he got in the race. But when he said that homosexual marriage was ok by him, that floored me.

He will have to clarify that statement and prove that he is pro-traditional marriage and not taking advice from Rudy before I lift a finger to help his campaign. I want someone who supports traditional pro-life values.

Even Gary Bauer said he was disappointed in Gov. Perry.

a run for president in a behind-the-scenes effort to set up a shadow campaign

While the true conservatives--Bachmann and Cain--have been out there for months, taking their message to the common people, and while Palin campaigned nationally in 2008, this career politician with the highly suspect history is soliciting the power brokers and money men.

With Romney fizzling out (the Tea Party types will never swallow him), the elites want their phony from Texas to swoop in.

... when he said that homosexual marriage was ok by him, that floored me.

That's not what he said.

Perry, who has been weighing a presidential run, said he opposes gay marriage — but that he's also a firm believer of the 10th Amendment.

He "supports state rights so much that he's fine with New York's approval of gay marriage but still called himself an "unapologetic social conservative."

Rick Perry has one of the best pro-life records of any GOP candidate or prospective candidate.

when he said that homosexual marriage was ok by him

He did NOT say that. He said homosexual marriage IN NEW YORK was OK. BIG difference. He's basically taking a Federalist viewpoint and I'm OK with that. Honestly, with our fiscal situation at a critical mass, I really don't care about gay marriage, it just doesn't matter that much right now. Nor is one President going to change anything about it anyway.

......”Miner said people who know Perry understand that two things he feels strongly about are states’ rights and the institution of traditional marriage.
“Nothing has changed with the governor’s philosophy here,” he said.

Besides confirming Perry’s support of a federal constitutional amendment defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman, Miner pointed to the governor’s state record.

Perry supported the Texas Defense of Marriage Act and a state constitutional amendment defining traditional marriage, Miner noted.”

Rubio has to prove his Natural Born Citizen status first. He can do that...but all this talk of running as anyone’s VP before giving the evidence he is a NBC...is worthless.

Florida Gov.[Rick] Scott Promotes Controversial Education Reforms [Rick Perry has championed] “Gov. Rick Scott has begun discreetly promoting the same changes to the higher education system that Texas Gov. Rick Perry has championed. The proposals include some of the same reforms pushed by conservatives in K-12 schools: merit pay for professors, tenure reform, and generally a much greater emphasis on measurement of whether professors are turning out students that meet certain goals.

The attempt in Texas has caused something of an identity crisis in that states higher education community, with opponents saying what needs to be reformed is Perrys control over university policies.

Scott told the News Service of Florida on Tuesday that he has discussed the Texas reforms with his appointees to university and college governing boards in an effort to line up support for a nascent campaign to dramatically change how universities and colleges are funded, overhaul professor tenure, emphasize teaching over research, and give students more influence.

An admirer of Texas, Scott has developed a friendly relationship with Perry, who is flirting with the idea of seeking the Republican nomination for President in 2012. Texas is regularly praised for its business-friendly climate and has weathered the economic recession better than most states. ……………………….”

.

Perry did not say ‘homos’ are alright with him.

Perry is for state’s rights, the 10th admendment.

“Our friends in New York six weeks ago passed a statute that said marriage can be between two people of the same sex. And you know what? That’s New York, and that’s their business, and that’s fine with me,” he said to applause from several hundred GOP donors in Aspen, Colo. “That is their call. If you believe in the 10th Amendment, stay out of their business.”

>Perry is also known for his socially conservative views on homosexuality, and he opposes same sex marriage. He condemned the United States Supreme Court decision in Lawrence vs. Texas, which struck down a Texas sodomy law. He called the law “appropriate”

Perry targets the ACLU as the primary force behind a leftist push to accept homosexuality and challenge Scouting’s duty to God.
