HUNTSVILLE, Alabama - Hispanics nationally are stepping up their criticism, but U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks won't apologize for saying he would "do anything short of shooting them" to keep illegal immigrants out of America.
"I'm not going to back off because these folks want to resort to name-calling," Brooks said Monday. Brooks spoke after a week in which he was criticized by the head of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and two groups of Hispanic Republicans.
U.S. Rep. Charles Gonzalez, D-Tex., urged Brooks' Republican colleagues last Wednesday to repudiate his comments. Those comments include Brooks comparing illegal immigrants to house-breakers as he defended Alabama's tough new immigration law.
At a town meeting in June, Brooks said he supports any measure "short of shooting them" that would force illegal immigrants back to their home countries.
"Rhetoric referencing acts of violence has no place in the discussion for realistic solutions to our country's immigration problems," Gonzalez said. "Words have consequences, and Congressman Brooks chose irresponsible words that reflect a hateful, dehumanizing undercurrent in the discussion on immigration."
The Republican group "Somos Republicans!" said on its website that Brooks "should apologize for his remarks, stop bashing immigrants, and instead work with his colleagues on a complete overhaul of our broken immigration system."
Another group, Arizona Hispanic Republicans, said Brooks "is no Christian Compassionate."
Brooks dismissed his critics as supporters of complete amnesty for illegals and said their comments are "traditional politics."
"I was speaking in hyperbole in order to emphasize a point," Brooks said of his "anything short of shooting them" remark.
He noted that the next sentence in his oft-quoted comment was, "Anything that is lawful, it needs to be done because illegal aliens need to quit taking jobs from American citizens."
"Anything that is lawful," Brooks emphasized Monday.
Brooks brushed aside questions about whether his remarks are a distraction in the immigration debate or cast Alabama in a negative light.
"They don't like Alabama or Alabama's immigration law," he said of his critics.
Brooks said his stand is popular across the country. He's been on media outlets in various places, he said, and was told last week by a Texas politician that he could easily win office in Houston.
Brooks and controversy are becoming linked. His Wikipedia page now has a "controversies" section. It details the "anything short of shooting them" controversy and the April flap that followed him calling some House members "socialists" on the House floor. Brooks withdrew that remark from the record after being criticized..
Yea, 19 years has changed a lot of thinking in CA and throughout the nation. People still believe in what the popular EMK called “The Dream.” Deep down though, they must know that “The Dream” is impossible.
ILLEGAL, ILLEGAL, ILLEGAL, do they not understand the word? Do we allow a burgular who is caught in the act to keep what he has stolen? Do we allow a trespasser who is caught in the act to occupy the territory he is trespassing on??? Apparently we do.
Perhaps the problem is that Gonzalez does not have a good understanding of the English language. For example, maybe he doesn't actually understand the meaning of "short of", and so his rant is based on Gonzalez' own ignorance.
Brooks' statement actually renounces violence. It's hard to reconcile speech that renounces violence with Gonzalez' description of that speech as "irresponsible words that reflect a hateful, dehumanizing undercurrent in the discussion on immigration".
However, if you want to take Gonzalez' words literally, then Gonzalez' own words actually "reference acts of violence", because those actual words came out of his own mouth. But that would be silly. As was Gonzalez' overblown, phony outrage.
Perhaps Gonzalez could use some lessons in remedial English...
Mo be da MAN!
And what is wrong with shooting them? I see this as the preferred strategy.
ML/NJ
Go Mo.
I wish one of our “leaders” would ask Calderon what his government is doing to improve their own peoples lives so they don’t need or want to come here.
We should just make Mexico our 51st. state.
Everyone thought it would be okay to just let the Nazis have the Rhineland, and maybe then they’d quit invading and taking over people’s homes.
We all know how that worked out. Cowardice and appeasement, which is what you’re advocating, never prosper.
I don’t care what state you moved to; you let them keep California (they’ve already got it), and they’re coming for your state next.
Ping!
My state wakes up judges in the middle of the night to deport illegals who are caught. More states should do the same.
I’m not a coward, I tried to fight for CA. I just realized it is a losing battle. California is too far gone. It is overrun by illegals and I can’t even stand to step foot in the state anymore, it makes me sick what they did to it.
Claymores would be more efficient.
54% of Hispanics self-describe themselves as white. Hispanic/Latino is a phony classification supported by the Dems to create another victim class that can be imbued with special rights. The same holds true for “Asians,” which lump together people based on geography without any common culture, language, history, etc.
Anyone like you, willing to give in and give away huge portions of America to foreign nations, deserves to live like a lizard in Arizona.
This desecration of our flag occurred on the main lawn directly in front of the Arizona Capital building on 7-31-2010....All caught on video.
These illegals and their Mexican pro-illegal alien supporters, spray painted, "Burn this racist city to the ground" and placed a toilet seat on Old Glory as they walked all over our flag....
I guess since cities like Phoenix are crawling with illegals, and have become the Mexican kidnap capital of the country, you want to give away AZ next...
Then you can start giving away Vegas, Dallas, Denver etc...
ha, this guy is a light weight, he dont have a sack until he calls them foreign invaders.
News reports say Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Peru are conspiring to collude with The Anti-Defamation League, The American Civil Liberties Union, the Southern Poverty Law Center and several other civil and immigrant rights groups to infringe on US sovereignty to make laws as we see fit. The co-conspirators filed a federal class-action lawsuit against Georgia's law and are now asking a judge to halt the measure pending the outcome of their case.
=====================================
Nothing good has come from this plague of lawbreakers violating our borders. Illegals are a national security threat. They are conspiring to tear down democracy. Their home countries--and the US govt--- are helping them.
WAITING TO GET THEIR ORDERS FROM MEXICO
Reconquista shock troops at Phoenix Capital protest, May 29, 2010. law June 30, 2008.
===============================
THE FACTS ARE THESE : Mexico is calculatedly staging the "war on drugs" and other border violence -- with a hidden agenda--to loot the United States treasury. Using deceit and guile, Mexico has infiltrated the US political system, from domestic to foreign policy, as well as L/E. The Mexican govt is sending millions of Reconquista shock troops from Third Worlds over the border (illegal aliens) coaching them about taking over the US system.
Mexico is the staging area for Central and South American Third World illegals to stream over the border into the US.
==============================
Central America and Mexico are conning the US -----extorting US tax dollars to support Marxist/terrorist movement via the Merida Initiative----a despicable con to arm its police and military using US tax dollars to protect terrorists and drug cartels who are moving across the border into the US.
============================================
Clearly, the Mexican govt is fomenting drug violence in order to: (1) get billions of dollars in US assistance, and, (2) to help their populations flee over the border claiming they are victims of violence and need "asylum." Asylum claims gets illegals thousands of dollars in SS funds.
Mexican Federales are getting rich using some familiar strategies:
(1) plotting to become a ward of the US;
(2) faking victimization;
(3) secretly revving up internal conflicts;
(4) play-acting the ignoramus;
(5) claiming they can't "control" their enemies without US money;
(6) organizing voting blocs----exchanging votes for US cash.
It's all a big scam---illegals are being financed and coached by Third World governments.
The corrupt federales are salivating to loot the US Treasury, to get their dirty hands on trillions in US foreign aid---and they need a voting bloc to manipulate sap-happy US govt officials.
Hyphenates should be banned from all activities inside the US....... especially politics. They calculatedly use hyphenation to form pressure groups---separatist voting blocs----to extort US tax dollars from working class Americans.
Hyphenation is antithetical to the American way of life. Hyphenation is clearly a diabolical plot to undermine democracy. Either they are full-fledged Americans or they are not.
==========================================
WE NEED TO DO THIS NOW The United States of America is a melting pot. Hyphenation needs to be banned.
It's been proven time and time again hyphenates are national security risks......all of the hyphenates we've observed have a hidden agenda that undermines US interests........and is harmful to our internal security.
Most Americans would concede that they are not comfortable being around hyphenates. Hyphenation-separation is NOT the American way of life.
Anything that hyphenates should be declared persona non grata in America. These hyphenates----balkanized separatists------put their loyalties to their homelands over and above the safety and security of US citizens.
We need to put this into law----that anything that hyphenates is considered a national security risk----they are persona non grata and should be ordered to leave the US.
All hyphenates should be outlawed......those whose allegiance lies with their ethnicity are mot welcome. Hyphenated should be ordered out. Their home countries or continent will welcome them back with open arms.....especially with bags full of US tax dollars that they looted from the treasury using multiple identities.
No more hyphenates with loyalty to a foreign country on US soil.
Your state isn’t deporting illegals. No state is. At best, they’re making them another state’s problem.
Wrong, they send them back to Mexico City, if they end up back in the US, it isn’t our fault.
While the critics of the republican are carping on his “anything short of shooting them” comment, the Messican illegal aliens, the Central American illegal aliens, and the Moslim trash Obama brought in - all are proving to be true T*rd World people. Their violent crime rates are astounding
Hispanics do everything including shooting, but they also kill with machetes, gasoline, ad nauseam.
