Cain: Romney’s religion a bar to GOP nod
By Ralph Z. Hallow - The Washington Times 8:50 p.m., Monday, July 18, 2011

Republican presidential primary candidate Herman Cain says front-runner Mitt Romney cannot win the party’s White House nomination next year because of his religion.

“Romney would be a good choice, but I don’t believe he can win,” Mr. Cain told editors and reporters of The Washington Times.

Mr. Cain on Monday became the first of Mr. Romney’s nine declared and potential nomination rivals to say publicly and explicitly something long whispered: namely, that the former Massachusetts governor’s Mormonism is an obstacle too big to overcome in the most solidly Republican region in the country. The South has a high concentration of evangelical Protestants, many of whom doubt the legitimacy of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

“I know the South, and you have to win the South. Mitt Romney did not win it when he ran against John McCain” in the 2008 primaries, said Mr. Cain. “The reason he will have a difficult time winning the South this time is because when he ran the first time, he did not do a good job of communicating his religion. It doesn’t bother me, but I know it is an issue with a lot of Southerners.”

Mr. Cain, a retired corporate executive who made a career out of rescuing dying companies, including the faltering Godfather’s pizza chain, argued that a Republican candidate needs to win Southern states.

“If you don’t win South Carolina, Georgia and Florida, you can’t win the nomination. And then you can’t win the presidency,” he said.

Didn't know Cain supported Romney in '08. I wonder if that was real support or more of Romney was the least bad candidate at that time.

“I like Mitt. I supported him in the last presidential election,” said Mr. Cain, who softened his often booming baritone voice almost to a whisper. “I don’t think he is going to be any stronger this time around against Barack Obama, even though Obama has a terrible record.”

It sure would be a shame if Obama got re-elected because of the Mormon religion.

Romney is a liberal, just like obama.
Romney and obama both support abortion.
Romney and obama both trumpet man made global warming.
Romney and obama both support expanded ethanol use.
Romney and obama both support the homosexual agenda.
Romney and obama both support gun control.
Romney and obama both support government run health care.
Romney and obama both support big government.
So how is it Romney might be better?

I like Herman Cain for many reasons, including his competence and his honesty. The man knows what he’s talking about, and he’s not afraid to say it.

Which may be his undoing.

I hope the new President puts this man to work on the economy in Jan. 2013.

He’s not Obama and we don’t want Obama, right?

Besides the black and white of it, they are politically the same.
The point being made make sure Romney never makes it out of the GOP primaries.
Your reply seems to indicate that even though the men are the same politically Romney would be a better choice. I pointed out between the two there is no choice.

Oh for heaven’s sakes! Criticize his policies, but just leave his religion out of it. Don’t conservatives believe in the First Amendment any more?

He’s not criticizing his religions, he’s predicting that some voters will find it unacceptable. Cain SUPPORTED Romney last time (which gives me the creeps, frankly).

And WTF does the 1st amendment (a prohibition on government restriction) have to do with this?

Yeah I can’t stand Romney but it has nothing to do with him being Morman. With that statement Cain smeared a lot of Southerners as Christian bigots.

Stupid, Stupid, Stupid.... ONCE AGAIN... when a reporter asks you whether or not Romney’s religion is a problem... the correct answer is “NO, his flip-flopping on the issues and inability to give strait answers is his problem”. WHY, WHY, WHY do we fall for this liberal traps every time.

Not based on their political governance, in that both men are the same.

How is an invididual critiqing someone’s religion the same as the government forbidding someone from practicing their religion? Do you even know what the 1st ammendment means?

Wow. While I like Herman Cain, he makes two substantial blunders while supposedly 'attacking' Romney:

“Romney would be a good choice" ... [Herman. Please. You could not be more wrong.]

Herman Cain says front-runner Mitt Romney cannot win the party’s White House nomination next year because of his religion. ... [There is absolutely no reason for a GOP POTUS candidate to say this. There are so many legitimate policy reasons for nonconservative Mitty to not receive the nomination. All this does is aid the enemy by giving validity to their unfounded slurs of conservative voters (it slams Southern conservative voters especially).

DUmb. Stupid. Unnecessary. Herman just shot himself in the foot ... twice!

It is not bigotry to be concerned that a man’s religious faith says something about his core beliefs that makes you uncomfortable with having him as the President of the US.
Ditto with having a man who produces fraudulent paper as a birth certificate and gloats about it.

It’s too bad discussing these concerns aloud casts people as “bigots”. Otherwise they will have to express their discomfort only in the ballot box.

It is not bigotry to be concerned that a man’s religious faith says something about his core beliefs that makes you uncomfortable with having him as the POTUS.

While this is true, in this culture and media, it doesn't matter. It's perceived to be bigotry and therefore it IS. And it's completely unnecessary! With regard to Mitty, all a GOP POTUS candidate needs to say is ....

"Republicans cannot credibly run on repealing Obamacare with Romney as the nominee."
