“You go to jail for ten days. You go to prison for ten years.”

Yep, but in this state every day in jail awaiting trial counts as two days served on any resulting prison sentence because the county jail is considered a far worse place to be than any prison in the state.

This might be one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. Now a day is not a day...it's two. Unfreepingbelieveable.

The two I've been in (county jails) were absolute s### holes, that was in my drinking days, more than 30 years ago. I know they aren't supposed to be country clubs but they surely constituted cruel and unusual.

One was in the middle of January, temps outside were below zero and something was amiss with their heating system, not too cold mind you but it got up to 115 F. in there. Most of us stripped bare a$$ naked but that's not a lot of relief when it's that hot, I spent a miserable 36 hours there.

The other one was actually a town jail, not county. The jailer accidentally left the cell unlocked, there were only 2 of us in the cell. The other guy simply walked out, he tried to convince me to go with him but drunk as I was, I knew better. I knew that I'd bail out in the morning but adding escape to my relatively minor charges would have been compound stupid.
