SAN DIEGO -- The family of a top Navy surgeon is speaking out about the night they say he was beaten by a Chula Vista police officer.

In October 2008, following a Jimmy Buffet concert, members of the Harris family said their good time turned into a nightmare.

"I was terrified for my husband and horrified for my children," said May Harris, the alleged victim's wife.

10News learned Krafft was one of 9 officers named in a police brutality suit settled for $85,000 in 2009.

It sounds like they're used to being an ATM...

What a shame.
Chula Vista used to be a nice town.

I wish they would not settle...go to trial and let the jurors write as many zeros as can fit on the check

“Your Honor, what number comes after a trillion?”

The more I read such stories, the more I lose confidence in law enforcement. I’m happy to say I’ve never met a policeman like one of those.

Cholo Vista has been a dump of a place for at least the last 15 years. The garbage from San Ysidro just keeps moving north.

I have. In my experience, they seem to recruit cops from the ranks of people who were bullies in high-school. 2 different people from my HS class are cops. The top 2 bullies.

People used to respect police officers, but times have changed. Many cities and states now view drivers as ATM's. One town near here has 3 or 4 speed limit changes in about 3 miles on the same road. 45 - 40 35 40 35. These guys will write you up any chance they get. This behavior breeds mutual contempt.

I’m waiting for the day citizens start shooting cops like this.

Suppose a soldier in Iraq did the same thing to an Iraqi civilian under similar circumstances. Would he not be in big trouble, maybe looking at prison?

California used to be a nice state, too.

The earth has orbited the sun many dozens of times since that was last true.

I grew up there. Cook Elementary, Hilltop Jr, Hillto Sr then UCSD. It
was “home” off/on from 1961 to 1983 exclusive of some time in Federal Way, WA and Springfield, VA. It’s nothing like the city I called home now.

In a statement, police said: “The simple fact that an officer has been named in a lawsuit does not indicate fault or wrongdoing, even if that officer has been named in a prior lawsuit … We believe the actions of our officer and department were appropriate and justified.”

###

Sounds like the whole department is corrupt.

Another power-tripping cop! These cops need to be weeded out! And this cop needs to go to jail for assault!

“Sounds like a pretty expensive jerk to have on ones police force”

There is (or at least was) a cop like this in the large NJ city where I work. A middle aged white guy who they would have out there directing traffic at the premier business area of the city, a place where all the most important people are passing through.

The man seemed to be basically psychotic. It was truly frightening to think he was carrying a gun. He seemed overwhelmed by the duty of directing traffic at a simple intersection. Maybe he didn’t like the assignment, maybe he was given it as punishment, I don’t know, but he acted like a maniac.

He would bang on people’s car hoods, scream at the drivers, scream at the pedestrians, have people pull their cars over, so he could yell at them. I never saw him give anyone a ticket.

Every day he was out there, carrying on like this. Quite a spectacle and it really made you question the intelligence of those running the city. City hall is only a few blocks away, so many people from there must have encountered him.

We were all pretty sure he was going to pull someone from their car and just shoot them.

That never happened, but he did arrest, for no good reason, a rather elderly black man who was a well known office holder (current or former I can’t remember, but a prominent guy).

That was the last we saw of the cranky cop.

There was no beating but long time ago they arrested my dad.

He was a landlord to some bad lying welfare getting (even though they both worked and left the kids home alone) tenants who didn’t pay rent and tried to steal the fridge my dad got for the apartment. The female make believed to the popo that my dad came at her or something.

They tricked my uncle into coming outside and arrested him too for reasons I still don’t understand. And some female cop was very rude to my mother when she went to bail them out.

And once a cop called moi a “scumbag”. But I don’t wanna get into that story. ;D

On the other hand some emaciated junkie broke in once, my uncle laid him out and the cops came and were very cordial and professional and hauled the perp away.

Thing is they are people just like everyone else. Some are bullies who get their kicks bossing people around or abusing them as the case may be. Some are jittery types who’s fear for their own safety causes them to grossly overreact to the slightest perceived danger. Some are just ordinary joes who just look at like any other job. Trying to do a good job or just going through the motions and by the book like any other government robot (DMV/post office/TSA ect). Some are heroes. And some are crooks. And any combination of all that.

The good ones should get a raise and our thanks.

The bad ones (including those who fear leads them to murder dogs on drug busts) should be rooted out and canned after a ceremony where they rip the badges and any rank insignia off their shirts. But their union makes that difficult.

And then there are the higher ups who make the policy decisions. At least here in Chicago they are all halfwits.

Hoho, don’t get me started on using police as revenue creators. That’s the department’s top priority in lots of places nowadays.

I guess if it was my job to shake down drivers I’d do it, gotta put food on the table right? Who cares if it’s moral!? ;d
