Disability or not, this gal and her folks are leaches on society. This gal now, if not already, is going to be ostricized not for being disabled, but for being a smarta alec whiner, sniveller, punk.

This retard, is probably going to get grants and scholarships, so she can become a lawyer, and add misery to other’s lives, and abuse the legal system for her own personal agenda. Mark my words, her lifetime is going to be one that we hear more and more about over the coming years.

I did not say I thought the school should be forced to allow her on the cheerleading squad.

I know. You were trying to be reasonable. Unfortunately, the other side is not reasonable. They're out of touch with reality, and nasty to boot. There's no way to be nice, when someone has decided to sue. If she gets involved with the squad at this point, it's publicly caving in to blackmail, and it will affect everything that happens with the squad, and also every other team and club at that school, plus every other school in the state.

Will this girl sue when she is rejected for a general surgery residency?

Will she sue a dental school that says, “Sorry! No admission!”

If the dental school is also funded by tax dollars, I’m sure the parents would sue (and win) there too.

blind people often use taxis. they need to use ATM’s JUST LIKE YOU.

OK ... I'm mildly curious.

How does that work? Seems like every taxicab I've been in had those gawdawful rear windows that only roll halfway down. Sitting in front would put the passenger on the wrong side of the car.

I didn’t read the article but blind people can’t be pilots, no matter how badly they want to. I don’t know if this is a school “support the team” thing or one of the competitive cheer teams. Forget the latter, but she can still attach pom poms to her chair and cheer the team — maybe they can even allow her a title of Team Spirit Coordinator and let her be on the football sidelines.

Also, I bet the special Olympics could use a great cheerleader. Of all people she should be very supportive of those athletes’ efforts!

I’m sorry about her being in a wheelchair but if you can’t do the jumps like the other cheerleaders then you can’t cheer. There are many many little girls every year who want to do it but can’t make the team time to put your big girl pants on and deal with life. Most teams have 5 members and 100+ girls trying out for those positions forcing them to give on just because she is in a wheelchair is not fair to the other 99 who could do the jumps and didn’t make it.

Why a cheerleader? Make her the starting running back on the football team.

NONE of us get to do everything we want in life.

I was a late bloomer in high school. I loved to play baseball, and would have loved to have been on the high school baseball team. I wasn’t good enough.

At the time the other guys were taller, stronger, and able to do more than I could on the field.

Should I have gone to court and forced the team to put me on the squad, so I could perform at a lower level than the person I replaced?

I’m sorry for this young girl. I wish her the best life possible. I don’t want to set limits for her, but we are not setting limits. Nature did.

In some ways she is no different than I was in high school. Both of us were limited as to what we could productively contribute to the team.

It sucks. You’re not happy about it. That’s life.

Actually the ATM’s are made for both walk up and drive up. To save cost the put the braille on all ATMs, then they do not have to worry about which goes where.

>>"She likes to dance."<<

Really????

>>"She wants to get people excited for games. She has friends on the cheerleading squad. “I just think it would be fun,” the 16-year-old said.<<

Oh well, as long as YOU think it might be FUN for YOU, that's all that matters. Sue your way onto the squad. Because we all know no other girl gets rejected for her lack of ability. YOU get whatever YOU want, right?

These parents are obviously the type who have beaten into this girl's brain that there are "no limitations." Guess what...there are.

Maybe instead of spins and kicks, the school could build her a ramp for her chair, beef up the motor, and she could jump over the crowd.

But your idea sounds more realistic.

For fokk’s sake, she’s two stumps away from being a welcome mat! No cheer for you! Sorry, but wanting something isn’t enough reason for destroying an otherwise-functioning group activity.

It’s like being indignant that Terri Schiavo wasn’t allowed to try out for the olympics. This chick’s lawyer needs to be disbarred and shamed into a lifetime of apologizing for being a jackass.

"When I was in High School, those who had the “spirit” but couldn’t do the routines, were in the Pep Squad."

Bingo. Not everyone who tries out makes it. The same for dance teams, sports teams, certain choirs, jazz or other bands, etc. It's called "welcome to life, develop your strengths and use them".

>>Teenage girls can be really dumb, mean, and petty ( I know, I raised two)..so I’m inclinded to fault the coach, the school AD,and the principal for not having more smarts.
<<

She was allowed to try out, just like every other candidate.

She failed on the physical aspects. Her scores were not high enough to be on the squad.

Other girls DID qualify, based on their scores.

So are you still for this “affirmative action” move?

It’s amusing to see the bleeding-hearts on the linked story, saluting the girl’s “courage.”

Yeah, it takes a lot of “courage” to get your parents to call an ambulance chaser to sue the school.
