What the heck is "suitable live plant material?" Vegetables are suitable? Would they prefer pot? Maybe it the vegetables were in beds without the boxes, it would have been okay. (glad they aren't looking at my front yard, I have vegetables there--lucky for me it's a small town--MANY of us have veggie gardens in our yards)

Her yard looked great, no weeds, no long grass, no rodents...

How ironic---there's Ms. Michelle telling everyone to grow and eat vegetables, and then there's Oak Park telling people it's a crime. Someone needs to get with the program.

Michelle is using gov’t property for a garden, this citizen is using their own.

“What the heck is “suitable live plant material?”

Suitable live plant material is simply what everyone else plants. No uniqueness or thinking out of the box. Last year, we grew potatoes in our backyard. Most neighbors don’t care on way or the other BUT we do have one neighbor that is a pain. Potatoes? How ugly. You should plant azaleas or something more suitable? You can’t eat azaleas (I said). In Suburban areas (not all but many), people have the tendency to plant what everyone else is planting. Little plants with tons of mulch and no weeds. I think it is more “free” in the country. You plant what you like and that includes vegetables and fruits. (Gee, do you think I wish I lived in a more rural area or what?!!)

This is my first year of having a “serious” garden, and I tried to plant things I knew we would eat. Aromatics are wonderful too — rosemary, basil, etc. — and anyone who’s seen a squash flower knows they’re spectacular.

This is getting so stupid. Just a couple of days ago I learned that here in MI if you put up an inflatable or temporary pool more than 2’ deep you have to have a permit. And an electrical inspection! How crazy is that??? We’re nagged to death as parents about sedentary kids who eat too much junk food, are on the computer too much and spend too much time in front of the TV, but we put up a pool and they throw up red tape roadblocks.

Even the White House has a garden in the lawn these days. I guess you gotta rank. Peons should not grow their own food, just grow food for the Politico’s.

As a reality check, I would like to know how long it has been since Michelle weeded in her garden. If ever...

"suitable live plant material?"

I once read the specs on a public landscaping project in Pasco County, Florida. Public projects always spec "native" material (except when they want to use $25,000 Indian Date Palms to line the boulevards) Will never forget that "native" was defined (from memory) as "material not introduced by Eurpopeans prior to the sixteen-hundreds."

And was way before anybody had ever heard of the Post Racial President.
