Republicans were unable to recruit a well-known challenger to Rep. Heath Shuler (D-N.C.) last cycle.
But that is not likely to be the case in 2012, after a proposed Congressional map released last week indicated the western 11th district will become substantially more favorable to the GOP.
...
Jeff Hunt, the district attorney for Henderson, Polk and Transylvania counties, is considered the strongest candidate at this early point by key Republican operatives.

Jeff Hunt, elected District Attorney for Henderson, Transylvania, Polk counties (Polk is outside the CD, but the other two are in the heart of the district).
Dr. Dan Eichenbaum, tea party candidate & Navy veteran who lost GOP primary in 2010
Col. Spence Campbell (US Army, retired)
Jeff Miller, the 2010 nominee, will not run again.
Heath Shuler is pretty popular. I don’t think he will be beat.
How about Gus Frerotte? He chased Shuler out of DC once before!
Shuler is a jackass, turned a lot of people off with his attacks on Jeff Miller, only got 54% last time, and had liberal Asheville stripped from his district. He’s toast.
Gus is living and working in the St. Louis area. I don’t think he is giving this race serious consideration.
The libs don’t like Shuler. They are always saying he is really a republican. Personally, I like the guy but I don’t like in Asheville now. He is pretty much what dems used to be before they were taken over by the “progessives” and just plain nutcases.
We lived in the NC-11 for years. A She Ville has long been a GRANOLA GHETTO, in more recent years it has been colonized by the SHORT HAIRED LADIES. These wonderful ladies now occupy most of the administrative offices in the quite large health care industry there. Moving Asheville to the moon or perhaps Mercury would be a good idea.
Of the four candidates mentioned, Spence Campbell is the one I know best. He would be a great congress critter.
Dr. Teaparty on the other hand may not be what he pretends to be. My hypothesis is he is not really prolife, he may likely be a stealth algore supporter. Why do I believe these things wrt Dr. Lipton? Ms C and i had the opportunity to be the fly on the wall during last primary campaign.
What ever his positions are what we overheard him tell to a republican activist and what he presents himself to be are 180 degrees opposite. Say any thing to get elected or a stealth pro-choice enviro-nazi?
Glad I don’t have to choose, either of the remaining three would be great. Spence would be my choice.

Shuler’s so toasty, I’d be shocked if he ran for reelection.
