Sen. Kyl: GOP Open To $150-$200 Billion In Revenue Increases As Part Of Debt Deal
Dow Jones ^ | 2011-07-06

WASHINGTON (Dow Jones) - U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl (R., Ariz.) said that Republicans are open to between $150 billion to $200 billion in increased federal revenues as part of an agreement to cut federal deficits in a bid to smooth the passage of a debt ceiling increase.

But Kyl said these figures didn't include closing any of the business tax deductions that Democrats have been pushing for, saying instead the total was reached by increasing fees charged to entities regulated by the federal government or sales of federal-owned property.

"I have characterized those as things like fee increases, revenue from sales and the like, but we are not talking taxes," Kyl said, speaking to Dow Jones Newswires.

Raising user fees is not a “tax increase” and, to the extent that the current user fee is below what a reasonable approximation of fair market value would be, it should be increased.

Any sale of assets should go directly and totally to reducing debt... NOT to enable more spending.

Increased “user fees” such as admission fees to state parks are not any different than a tax increase (like a sales tax).

All BS and very disappointing.

This is fine. Have those revenue increases over 10 yrs, with them triggering no sooner than year 7.

The SPENDING CUTS, however, MUST BE FRONT LOADED. No less than $400 Billion FY 2012 in deficit reduction from spending cuts.

This is the key to the whole matter. FRONT LOAD THE CUTS! Minimum $400 BILLION in deficit cuts for FY2012, all from spending cuts. The revenue increase over 10 yrs triggers no sooner than 2018.

Yes, because everyone knows a "fee" is not a "tax."

Idiot.

What is a Tax?

Well, that all depends on what the meaning of ‘is’ is.

The title is slightly misleading.
According to the article,

"Kyl's comments are part of a strategy by Republicans to appear open to reducing budget deficits through means other than just by slashing federal programs, without bending to Democratic demands to raise taxes....

Before we all jump on the GOP let's hear the proposal. Selling off federal land and putting it on the tax rolls and into productive use could be a good thing. If, OTOH, this is a typical GOP cave-in, then they've just put Hussein back in the WH for four more years.

This better be a trial balloon to see how the constituents react.

Otherwise, the Tea Party will need to do another major flushing in 2012 to get rid of more of the bass-turds.

We are being taken to the cleaners...Larry Kudlow got it right...the cuts have to be in this years budget...They will make all the cuts in the 9th and 10 th years...the next congress changes it so we get nothing..We need a trillion cut from this years budget..raise the debt celling for a year and do it over and over..

Oh, please. Give me a break.

Watch the ‘pubbies much, do ya? We *know* what their “proposals” involve: bending over, grabbing their ankles, and sticking their naked heinies ‘way up in the air where they’ll be readily accessible from “across the aisle”.

I think there is a difference between fee and tax. The former only applied to those who receive the service, and the other applied to all. Or I understand it wrong?

-Yeah, that's really going to happen...

The more likely result: Stupid Party gets suckered into increasing "revenues" in early years, and supposed Trillion dollar cuts get backloaded to later years... and wind up never going into effect with subsequent congresses. American people get the shaft, once again.
