On the heels of his recent opinion holding that "self-defense" is "good and sufficient reason" to carry a gun to church, Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli now says that state colleges like the University of Virginia cannot ban the carriage of concealed handguns by proper license holders. The opinion was written in response to a question by Senator Emmett Hanger (R-Mount Solon).

. . .

According to OpenCarry.org's campus carry map, most states are just like Virginia and do not generally prohibit by law gun carry on college campuses by visitors or students. . . .

God bless Ken Cuccinelli, and God bless the Commonwealth.

Oh my goodness, what about Old Dominion University?? Representative from Maryland just lost his nephew there. His Uncle is a big gun control advocate. If his nephew had a gun, maybe he would be alive today. The bad guys know that these kids are unarmed and pick on them as easy targets.

Colleges are more similar to a city then a business. They are supplied with their own police force and receive massive amounts of money from the government. They should not be able to make their own gun carry restrictions as most cities can't make their own gun restrictions, varying on state laws.

The Cummings boy didn’t live on campus, so he probably could have had one anyway - though I doubt he did.

Really? What is the functional equivalent of 'mayor' and is he elected by the Citizenry?

They are supplied with their own police force and receive massive amounts of money from the government.

So are railways:

They should not be able to make their own gun carry restrictions as most cities can't make their own gun restrictions, varying on state laws.

Somewhat agreed; though I would argue that the 2nd Amendment, being written in the passive voice wherein the actor is irrelevant, prohibits anyone in governance from infringing on the right of the people to keep and bear arms. {That said, there are actually a LOT of places which do illegitimately restrict the carrying of guns.}

One interesting thing to look into is the disdain for the State Constitution that State Government (especially the Judicial) has for following the State Constitution.
For example, New Mexico's Constitution says:

Art II, Sec. 6. [Right to bear arms.]
No law shall abridge the right of the citizen to keep and bear arms for security and defense, for lawful hunting and recreational use and for other lawful purposes, but nothing herein shall be held to permit the carrying of concealed weapons. No municipality or county shall regulate, in any way, an incident of the right to keep and bear arms.

Yet firearms are prohibited in even County Courts; which violates both sentences of this section.

And I suspect such is quite common across the Several States.

God bless this AG. I really wish more states would get more rock-ribbed about this.

He lived about a block off campus. Within sight of my daughter’s dorm when she was there. She graduated just before it went south.

To put this in the right prospective...the University is simply a state-run operation, with state employees, and paid by the state for their salaries. It might shock the UVA crowd that they are a state operation, but it’s the simple truth. Perhaps the simpler way to make UVA happy is just say “yes” to double-barreled shotguns because you’d just get two shots and then have to reload. Everyone could see you from two hundred feet away with your shotgun, and you could haul your extra shells in the book bag, if you thought you needed more than two.
