Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter celebrate 65 years together

ATLANTA — President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn endured the grind of political campaigns and the pressure cooker of the White House. But their marriage faced its stiffest test in the years after his presidency ended.

For the couple, who celebrate their 65th anniversary Thursday, it came when they decided to write a book together in the mid-1980s. Soon, they were sending each other nasty notes and squabbling about minor differences. They were ready to hand back their book advance when an editor arranged a ceasefire: Each would write their own sections, and sign them with their initial.

"They’re not all disagreements. There are some things I knew and that you knew we wanted to put in," Rosalynn says now of writing the 1987 book, "Everything to Gain: Making the Most of the Rest of Your Life."

Jimmy cuts in. "Well, I would say they were disagreements," he said, adding with a chuckle: "I was amazed at how paltry Rosa’s memory was."

There are bound to be some tense moments in the second-longest marriage in the history of the American presidency. In the long line of American presidents and first ladies, only George H.W. and Barbara Bush have been married longer.

Most worthless president - Jimmah or the rookie Hussein - still a tossup.

“Most worthless president - Jimmah or the rookie Hussein - still a tossup.”

We have yet to take inventory of the damage caused by Obama. Not to mention, Obama still has plenty of time to inflict more damage.

But at this point, Carter wins as most worthless / most damaging.

Well ... congratulations, Mr. & Mrs. Carter. 65 years of faithful marriage is a spectacular accomplishment, particularly so as American popular culture increasingly celebrates perversion.

Congratulations on hopefully 65 happy years together but the most angry look I think I’ve ever seen was on the face of Rosalyn when Jimmy gave his concession speech to Ronald Reagan in 1980. It is seared in my memory.

All I can say is those two ugly excuse for humans. They could not fine anyone that would have them so they had to marry one another..And Jimmy has never seen a terrorist he didn't like..

She met Gacy briefly because he was a Democrat party precinct captain. It’s a good thing he never lived to be in the Tea Party.

“Methinks bummer is most damaging.. “

I bought my first house in 1982, and by then the interest rates had eased to 14%. After the carnage of the Carter administration, with mortgage rates as high as 22%, the “experts” said mortgage rates would NEVER go below 10%.

I spent 1977-1981 in the Navy, and saw what Carter did to the military.

Both are bad, and either opinion is valid, but I don’t forget, I still vote Carter.

Despite the fact that he WAS a worthless president, and despite the fact that darn near drove the country into the ground, it is still quite an accomplishment for 2 people to spend 65 years together.

I cannot help but wish them a happy anniversary, and that I sincerely wish more couples couple be like them...in that regard, at least.

Yes, he sucked at being the President...but 65 years of marriage? That’s just cool.

Aw, that’s sweet. They stuck it out even after Jimmy had a “love child” with one of the Carter family slaves... ;P

I think Obama will win out.

But Carter is by far the Most Worthless Ex-President.

That list is not exclusive and we should send Rosalynn a sympathy card.
