Romney backtracks on argument that Obama made economy worse

Mostly true. The Whigs became the Constitutional Party a few years prior to the election, losing some of their members to the new Third Party, the Republican Party.

That election consisted of 4 political parties.

My fault for not being more clear in my analogy, but I do see a parallel between what happened to the Whigs and what could happen to the Republican Party with the rise of the Tea Party. I do think there's a similarity in the anger of voters (1860 vs. present) along with the widening gap between the establishment and the citizens.

Should voters not be given a true choice in ideologies (once again) this time, I can envision the anger propelling enough citizens to support a Third party.
