A nuclear power station in eastern Scotland had to shut down its reactors after "high volumes" of jellyfish were found on its seawater filter screens, the operating company said Thursday.
"Both units at Torness power station were manually shut down on 28 June, due to the high volumes of jelly fish fouling the cooling water screens," said a statement from EDF Energy, which runs the power station near Dunbar.
It explained that the shutdown was purely a precautionary measure and insisted that "at no time was there a danger to the public", nor had there been any impact on the environment. The nuclear regulator had also been informed.
"Reduced cooling water flows due to ingress from jelly fish, seaweed and other marine debris are considered as part of the station's safety case and are not an unknown phenomenon," the statement said.

all kinds of stuff gets sucked up in the intakes.. I'd hate to have to clean up that mess. yuck. but Hey, the money's good I bet ... and it's a job.
Good. I’ve seen those old movies where they didn’t take the proper precautions at some nuclear power plant and we ended up with giat sea creatures. Godzilla was bad enough, the last thing we need are giant radioactive jelly fish destroying London.
Those old movies were documentaries, weren’t they?
That must sting.
probably same ones that Marlin and Dory ran into
Spongebob and Patrick to the rescue!!!!
That’s still better than the exhaust which is blocked by a single two hundred foot wide radioactive jellyfish.
I’m presumming these are “traveling screens” ( i.e. an endless belt of screeening that dumps debris into a cleanup system). Most I’ve seen do have a “screen wash” feature to disloge sticky debris but I can see where these gooey critters could overmatch the system. OTOH, why not send the critters through the condensers and discharge the resultant cooked critter to the local scavengers ? (Yeah I know; they’ll plug up the tube sheets.) >PS
Life imitating ‘art’?
Strange world.. and that’s before man ever arrived on the scene with his toys to mess with..
Sounds like they need a few of Johnny Carson’s
“Bass-O-Matics” near the intake screens!
