ID measure passed quietly, while sanctuary cities bill died noisily (Texas)

An immigration-related provision tucked into a must-pass budget bill could have more of an effect on Texans than the high-profile sanctuary cities legislation that the Legislature did not pass.

Throughout the regular and special sessions, lawmakers spent dozens of hours debating and hearing testimony on so-called sanctuary cities legislation, which would prohibit governments from adopting policies that prevent law enforcement from asking about detainees' immigration status. The bill, which was labeled an emergency item by Gov. Rick Perry, never got out of the Legislature.

But a less examined — and arguably more wide-reaching — piece of immigration-related legislation will soon become a law.

A provision in the approved Senate Bill 1, the special session's must-pass school finance bill, will require people to prove U.S. citizenship or legal residence before they can renew or get a Texas driver's license.

Though sanctuary cities legislation would have directly affected only people who have contact with police, the driver's license provision will touch most Texas adults.

This begs the question...Is Rick Perry ready for the presidency when citizens are left in his state as target practice for illegals?

Is Rick Perry ready for the presidency

After going to CA during the last two days of the special session thus not supporting TSA and Sanctuary City bills?

You don't want the guy anywhere near DC. It was hard enough keeping him penned up when he was surrounded with Texas rednecks. In DC he would be total GOP establishment RINO.

The only thing that’s been proven effective is requiring the use of E-Verify and heavily penalizing employers that knowingly hire illegals. Everything else is just rearranging deck chairs.

They pass a *must show proof of citizenship or legal resident* provision to re-new or get a new driver’s license in Texas.

That is somewhat better than the anti-sanctuary cities bill, don’t you think?

< dimocrap mode> Darn, there go all the motor voters. < / dimocrap mode>

Actually, this is going to be tougher on the illegals, since most have to have some form of personal transportation. Of course, many drive here now without a license.

This will be immediately taken to court by the usual suspects in the Reconquista Front.

Tell that to Jocelyn, widow of Officer Johnson or officer Will’s pregnant wife. sanctuary is a “”state of mind” that relays the message that open borders violence and invaders are free to turn our cities into the wild west transforming them into rotten stench. PERRY SHOULD NEVER GET ON THE BALLOT.

Don’t let them fool you, the lack of a driver’s license means nothing to these takers.
I live in a Hispanic neighborhood in Los Angeles. Heck, all of Los Angeles is Hispanic. I look at the driver of every car I see being ticketed and they never look Hispanic, draw your own conclusions.

Hit and run accidents will become commonplace. Grab your camera and take pictures as fast as you can recover from the initial shock of being broadsided in the middle of a block.

Don’t let your jaw drop too far when you see someone making a right turn from the left turn lane.

Stop at all neighborhood intersections, stop sign or not. They don’t seem to know what they are.

We have smog inspections, when your car can no longer pass the tests, sell it to an illegal alien, it is worthless otherwise. They will use it until they get into an accident, at which point they will jump out of the driver’s seat and run. It’s downright amazing that some of these people can run.

Traffic light cameras don’t work on them, the cars have counterfeit tags and there is no way to know who they are or where they live.

Parking tickets don’t work either for the same reason.

Our police recently adopted the position of letting the drivers go when they pass a DUI checkpoint, even if they have no ID or registration.

This time of year you can see baby carriages everywhere, that is because the new mothers haven’t acclimated to their situation yet. By the time that kid is in kindergarten, that mother will be driving, set up in section 8 housing, giving meal tickets to the kids, and using the school to babysit until 6pm while the mother is getting paid to watch her sisters kid and vice versa.

I don’t think you can blame that on Perry, he tried to get the anti-sanctuary bill passed.

How about Bill White? He was the mayor.
(this was even a campaign issue)

HEY, when I renewed my driver’s license this past winter, I had to show my birth certificate, my old driver’s license and social secutity number. But then I’m not considered a minority, I’m just the end product of every nationality foreign and domestic that settled this country. I’ve grown sick of minorities sqawking about profiling, their “rights” and being offended by OUR flag. If they feel this strong, about the rules, laws and freedoms of this country, they can always go back to their “mother” country, whether they’ve been here for years or not. If “they” live here, learn English, our rules and laws, or go back to the Lovely place “they” or their parents escaped, to live a better life
I’m sick of their bellyaching. Love our ways or LEAVE US, we really don’t care.

I doubt it. Most of those that don’t have good enough fake documentation to get a driver’s license will most likely simply drive without one.

Not sure. Don’t know how the bill was written.

It’s kind of like that alleged tort reform. “Loser Pays”. How is that going to help? The losers are usually the corporations; etc, which passes costs on to us not the class action lawyers; so I don’t see how this changes anything but to make the lawyers; not their clients, richer.

Driver’s license, what’s that? I would suspect it would take the entire police force from Houston a long time to bring in all the illegals in this one city alone who have been ticketed for not having a valid license - that is if they can even find them. I wish they could have their vehicle confiscated but police have their hands tied. Just make sure your insurance is current - you will need it if you have an accident involving one of them because they won’t have any.
