L.A. County's Private Property War
LA Weekly ^ | Mars Melnicoff

Posted on 06/25/2011 7:57:26 AM PDT by BwanaNdege

"On Oct. 17, 2007, Marcelle opened the door to a loud knock. Her heart jumped when she found a man backed by two armed county agents in bulletproof vests. She was alone in the cabin, a dot in the vast open space of the Antelope Valley, without a neighbor for more than half a mile...."

"The men demanded her driver's license, telling her, "This building is not permitted — everything must go." Normally sassy, Marcelle handed over her ID — even her green card, just in case. Stepping out, she realized that her 1,000-square-foot cabin was surrounded by men with drawn guns. "You have no right to be here," one informed her."

“If it’s not fixed, the county has little to do but sue because it endangers life or limb or public safety in some way,”

And this is the way tyranny starts. It’s for your own good - even if it kills you. Bureaucracy will be the one to congratulate the doctor for performing a procedure even though it killed the patient. People don’t matter.

Wow...you have to get building permits before you build...and you can’t have 40 foot freight containers strewn about your property...Who’d a thunk it?

Some quiet reflection on the concept of property rights might serve you well.

Decades ago, Castaneda says the county gave him verbal approval to live there in a mobile home. He told the NAT team, which began photographing his spread: "Listen, I've been living over here for 22 years. And nobody has come over here to bother me."

For all those that profess love of small govt and the original intent of the Constitution, I say read this and FEEEEEEEL Something besides the need to control. It is way past time for these types of people to be live under the root side of grass. I don't care how ugly houses are, or how unsafe, property rights are inviolable. If you own it, you can do what you will with the property, of course subject to lawsuits for actual damage to another mans property. What are they going to do to the "palaces" of cardboard put up by the Hispanic hordes?

I though the new procedure was no knock dynamic entry with bang grenades and a battering ram after shooting the dog / s

Permit is a fine way of saying you need to ask pretty please, and grease the palm of the govt, to do what they will allow on what is a Constitutionally protected haven, YOUR PROPERTY. Bureaucrats and others have no problem with charging “rent” on property in perpetuity either. Simply put, there is no freedom, liberty or private property rights in this country. For that matter, freedom of speech, the right to assemble peacefully, and the right to keep and bear arms are simply privileges also.

Wow...you have to get building permits before you build...

Zoning and building permits have their place in an ordered and well run society...

In NJ you have to are supposed to get a permit to change out your hot water faucet washer...

There is a line, which universally is over stepped by most governments...

I went and read the entire article. Very informative. My initial take was that this is more than just code enforcement. This appears to be removing people off of the rural countryside and into places or situations where those people can be more controlled.

My other thought was that with the methods being used, they want someone to fight back and to allow the authorities to destroy them so thoroughly that no one will ever raise a finger let alone a voice to them again.

And if the second thought is the more accurate then CWII may just start in California after all.

Board of Supervisors' Nuisance Abatement Teams, known as NAT, instituted in 2006 by Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich in his sprawling Fifth District. The teams' mission: "to abate the more difficult code violations and public nuisance conditions on private property."

Their real mission is use the hammer, power, institution of government bureaucracy and taxpayer funds to overcome the ability of any average individual to "fight city hall". Now if by chance the individual has means and attorneys at his disposal, then the bureaucrats will kowtow to them and move on to someone else. This happens all the time in our so-called "land of liberty" but it involves US citizens and rarely illegals.

OMG, thank you for posting this infuriating article. And GOOD JOB to the LA Weekly for printing it.

Between stuff like this and the SWAT raids for ed loan fraud it is really getting scary how out of control our gov’ts have become.

The Tea Party’s job seems to get bigger every day.

These people need to be stopped, they need to be voted out of office wholesale.

I want some of these pres. candidates to start talking about FREEDOM!

Agree, but we aren’t talking about minor violations here. Would you want to own land next to one of the properties mentioned in the article?

Yes, like that poor veteran.

That’s exactly what it is.

I’m starting to think they really do have concentration camps planned for our future. The smokers are going first, then the soda drinkers, then the rest of you slobs.

I have found that county code “enforcement” officials to be the biggest a$$holes in the county, bar none. They make up rules, regs and laws as they go along, they lie through their stinking teeth and they are bullies of the first order.
I despise them.

Then, you know, don’t.

I find it interesting that the same strict constructionists that believe in the rule of law, are defending the law breakers. At least I am consistent in my beliefs.

If you don’t like the city ordinances, work to change them. (If you don’t like the Constitution, amend it.)

Sure.

If you don't want to look at another's property, build a fence or brick over your windows. Don't be hegemonic.

You must realize that Marcelle opened his door almost four years ago. Procedures and rules have changed a lot since then.
