At the time I heard something in the house, you know a bump," she states.
Melton knew she locked the doors and knew no one was supposed to be in the house. So when she heard something coming from the back bedroom, she was ready.
"I had never seen him," Peggy says. "I had just heard him and he was ranting and raving and he said 'I got a gun, I'm going to kill you. I said fine, I got a gun too."
Peggy says the intruder was hiding behind the bedroom door.
He threatened her and that's when she fired her first shot.
"He staggered all the way over there and said 'you shot me, you shot me.' And I said 'well duh, just beat you to it," she explains.

Good for her! America needs millions more just like her.
Peggy ROCKS.
great story
thanks for posting
She is not a victim. They intended her to be, but it didn’t work out.
“Instead I have a schoolteacher that leaves a big peace sign made out of Christmas lights on the front of his house year round. “
Short it out. Fry his circuit breakers.
Sounds like she got him with her deer rifle, not her concealed carry piece.
“Someone” took it out last year. It’s a two story and he put it higher up after that.
Charges for shooting a burgler in Taney County Missouri? Unless the Sheriff remits her to more range time for missing the tires of his truck, nothing.
You must have another state in mind. She might get dinner and teasing for only shooting him once, from her neighbors, but no prosecutor seeking reelection would ever charge her. As the great philosopher Tuco said: "If you're gonna shoot, shoot! Don't talk!"
Next time remember to double-tap, though. What is worth shootng once is worth shootng twice.
It should be done Mozambique style next. Anyone live close enough to her to teach that?
Better yet. Why did you shoot him ten times? Because that is all the bullets that the gun had in it.
Well, at least that means that burglars will be more likely to presume that your neighbor poses the easiest pickings in the neighborhood, which should keep you safer. :-)
Super Soaker.
Works wonders.
I’ve got one of those pellet guns that you cock once due to the piston and it has a scope.....from an angle it would be pretty hard to find the pellet.
Do like that E mail picture that was going around. Put a sign in your yard saying This house protected by Smith and Wesson and below that an arrow pointing to your neighbors saying He doesn’t believe in fire arms. Guess where the bad guys are going to go.
“Sounds like she got him with her deer rifle, not her concealed carry piece.”
Little wonder why he is on the critical list. If he is still alive, the surgeons, EMT staff, etc., were good.
