School shouldn’t be about control. It should be about mutual respect.

“School shouldn’t be about control. It should be about mutual respect.”

- Schools indeed should be environments dedicated to education and learning. Furthermore, they should be loving and caring in nature.

European schools of the 1950’s were seldom like that.

When my mother or any of her sisters once in a while got a little cocky in class and spoke back to the teacher, her parents - my maternal grandparents - would soon get informed and believe me, you would not like to be in the place of these teenagers.

Later on, Grandpa’s daughters got married to military officers, engineers and splendid scholars. Men of good breed and of ambition in life.

I went to University. My grandfathers did not. I never even met my paternal Grandfather. He died at the age of 55 two years before I was born.

My uncle fought Stalin, got shot in the Winter War and then went back to the front. He didn’t wish to experience his sisters getting raped by Russian troops.

We Europeans have pretty much of a heavy rucksack, but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy life. We know just how magnificent America could be like, despite the fact Hitler existed some decades ago on your soil..
