I'm not so sure about that....I think he was operating on two flawed assumptions: a) most people would approve of appointments like this and b)those who might not were too stupid to notice.

They have polling - they know those things aren’t true.
They are not/were not expecting a 2nd term. You can only pull off a scam like that in a complete information vacuum. They always knew over 4 years the truth about who they are would come out.
