Gay marriage just one vote shy of becoming law in New York despite Archbishop's objections
New York Daily news ^ | 06/15/2011 | Kenneth Lovett

ALBANY - Gay marriage moved just one vote shy Tuesday of becoming law in New York as the state's top Catholic raised holy hell trying to stop it.

Sen. Roy McDonald (R-Saratoga) - in a dramatic reversal from his earlier opposition - became the second GOPer in as many days to give his blessing to same-sex nuptials, bringing Senate support to 31 votes.

Thirty two votes are needed to approve a gay marriage bill Gov. Cuomo formally introduced Tuesday.

McDonald's change of heart came hours after Archbishop Timothy Dolan led a band of religious groups hustling to halt the momentum.

"The stampede is on," Dolan wrote in a blog post. "Our elected senators who have stood courageous in their refusal to capitulate on the state's presumption to redefine marriage are reporting unrelenting pressure to cave in."

Dolan equated the move to allow same-sex marriage to life in China or North Korea, where "government presumes daily to 'redefine' rights, relationships, values and natural law."

"Please, not here!," Dolan wrote. "We cherish true freedom, not as the license to do whatever we want, but the liberty to do what we ought."

The opposition from Dolan, other religious groups and conservative political outfits threatening retribution at the ballot box has turned the Senate into a pressure cooker for Republicans.

And McDonald snapped.

"You get to the point where you evolve in your life where everything isn't black and white, good and bad, and you try to do the right thing," McDonald, 64, told reporters.

"You might not like that. You might be very cynical about that. Well, f--- it, I don't care what you think. I'm trying to do the right thing."

The Archbishop ought to use church discipline and excommunicate all Catholic legislators who vote for this bill.

Otherwise, his objections hold no power at all.

BTW, It is the REPUBLICANS in the the legislature who are caving in one by one. The main steadfast hold out against this bill is ironically, A DEMOCRAT --- Senator Ruben Diaz (a Pastor as well) !! And get this --- he has two gay brothers!

GO FIGURE.

Agreed. Unless and until the Catholic Church gets serious about enforcing it’s rules upon it’s supposed adherents, they have no rules.

So the Archbishop issues his opinion, and this nice Catholic Senator says "f___ it"! There had better be a recall drive against this assclown by the end of the day.

Great quote... a dying breed of standard bearers unfortunately. Chances of God sanctifying an abomination like 'gay marriage'? Zero ad infinitum...

New York has plenty of problems and issues to deal with and they focus on ‘Gay Marriage’? Schmucks and cretins abound everywhere-— Weiner, Rangel and their cabal of lesser fools in Albany reveal the sick state of affairs in the statewide cesspool. Demented LIEberals and twisted RINOs-—pox on them all.

So REPUBLICAN Senators in NY believe that children should be denied either a mother or a father? Because that is what endorsing homosexual marriage does.

As I recall, it was a Catholic legislator in NY who cast the deciding vote to make abortion legal in that state even before Roe v. Wade. He also claimed he was trying to “do the right thing.” He also was lying; the vote was purely the result of political opportunism.

I don't think this is really a useful argument. It was the same thing the other side said a few weeks ago in Minnesota: "The legislature can't even come up with a budget and yet they spend their time worrying about putting gay marriage on the ballot?"

We may like what they did in MN and dislike what is going on in NY, but gay marriage is an important issue that needs to be tackled and stopped.

The problem there is NO referendum where the people of New York get to vote on the issue.

This is STATE LEGISLATORS prodded by the Governor, who are voting on this issue, regardless of whether or not, it reflects the New York resident’s will or not.

And even if we were to go on a referendum, very often ( see California ), the gay lobby challenges the result if it goes against what they want, in court.

And if I know NY, the courts WILL vote to overturn the will of the people.

I wrote a short satirical article, called, The Caveman.... those GOP senators from NY, who might ‘cave’ in and vote FOR the same-sex bill. I sent my writing in an e-mail to all 32 GOP State Senators from NY

Yesterday, the first official caveman was Senator Alesi who changed from UNDECIDED to YES!

I sent Alesi, a 2nd, terse e-mail. It was a one-word note, a four letter word. The first letter was F, the last letter was K.

NO. It is not what you think.

F I N K!

However, there are Demos, such as Joe Addabbo, who have also folded - he had voted against this bill previously and now claims that his constituents are phoning and telling him to vote for it! I just called his office and told his flunky that I hope he is denounced from the altar.

Do we have a conscience clause so that :

1) Religious organizations do not have to recognize gay marriage.

2) Religious individuals do not have to recognize gay marriage.

If there is no such opt out consicence clause, then it becomes an affront to liberty and will be against the very essence of the founding of this country.

Even if there is a “ conscience clause” religious institutions will be sued up the wazoo and threatened with the loss of tax exempt status. This is a full assault on society’s mores and values. Next up: New York State will allow abortion through all nine months even if and when Roe is eventually overturned. That is what the “progressives” want - to destroy values.
