As someone who did a stint with a “roadside assistance” company. who are they kidding? From their call to the company to me arriving was normally 2+ HOURS.

When your paying a few bucks a month for the service you get what you pay for. You also find people who want to get there few bucks worth (IE calling all the time) flat bald tires, out of gas, locked the keys in the car..

I stayed busy but 99% of what I was sent out to take care of was preventable. Put gas in the car, keep good tires on the car, and take the keys with you before you lock the door.

I have a 2006 BMW with runflats — I hate them with a passion! NJ roads are horrible for potholes, and runflats, having a stiffer sidewall, make the ride quality even worse.

And to replace them does cost a fortune — the tires alone are about $330 for my model, plus the cost to install. I had a nail in a tire recently, but runflats are also more difficult to repair, so a new tire it was >_<

After each service visit, I make sure to include in the comments to BMW section that they should bring back regular tires and a spare as an option.

Interestingly my new Cruze Eco does have a spare tire.

FWIW I haven’t had a flat tire on a road vehicle in decades.

Now my tractors, that’s a different story, LOL.

So the onboard tire pressure monitors can detect that piece of sharp metal debris in the road two miles ahead, capable of bursting your tire in an instant, and somehow warn you to steer clear of it?

Now THAT’S impressive technology! /sarc

Don’t buy a Gov’t Motors car!

I've got a lot of skin in that game (retirement checks) so I can't agree, LOL.

I have a new Cruze Eco.

It’s a wonderful car, FR haters to the contrary.

As far as highway usage, it’s extremely quiet at interstate speeds and gets 40+ mpg.

Yeah, it sure seems like there’s no pleasing some folks here. I’m glad to hear you like your Cruze. I see a lot of them around town, which is impressive considering how little time they have been on the market.

“False. It’s the best-selling compact car in the U.S. right now (see here). And the Eco accounts for 22% of the total Cruze sales (27% on the West Coast).”

Hmmm, how about that... Well, guess there’s just no telling what the American people will do. After all, they did vote in Pres Zero last go around...

I have a 2011 X35D (X5) with the RFT 305’s on the back. The folks at Discount Tire had a BIG smile on their face when I told them what my other car was.

We have a neighbor who bought a Cruze and she really likes it. It gets great fuel mileage and she drives about 50 miles each day.

Most people don’t know how to replace a spare tire anyhow...how many people do you see stranded on the side of the road with a flat, calling AAA, even with a spare tire and tools in the trunk?

I was headed home one day and saw a gal stopped with a flat. She tried to call her husband and several friends, but had no luck. I told her I'd do it for her. I guess she trusted me since I was in uniform. Took me every bit of five or seven minutes.

I’ve been driving a Toyota Corolla for twenty years; it has a full bore spare tire in a compartment beneath the cargo space.

There’s no accounting for luck - good or bad. I’ve had to change my flat tire (on an American car on American roads) four times, and I maintain my car! So I never go anywhere without a full bore spare tire and rim.

With the cost of a new car these days, you’d think they’d provide a chauffeur!

“I guess they don’t know that New Mexico highways are the natural habitat of the drywall screw.”

Drive past a Home Depot sometime. I see lots of nails on the roads around them. Contractors seem to leave lots of loose nails rolling around the bed of their pickup trucks; somehow the nails fall out.

I really don't think they've gone up that much. I just sold my 97 Saturn and looked at the paperwork, it was almost $15k. I got a Cruze Eco with a lot more stuff for a bit over $18k. The Cruze has a turbo engine, 6 speed trans, 10 airbags, stability control, and satellite radio.

After watching an entire tire blow out (complete simultaneous disintegration of tire walls) on a newish car on a freeway, and being able to pop a full-size spare back on, no way will I settle for a “patch kit”. If there’s little left to patch, you’re not going anywhere; at least you can drive on the donut tire.
