"Iraq will ask US troops to stay post-2011, says Panetta"

Hell we know that. No one ever wants to get off the US dole. Sorry, but we can't afford it.

It's over. Mission Accomplished and all that. Time to get out. Bring the boys back home.

Bring them home from Europe as well.

Considering they just voted not to increase oil production at the OPEC conference - despite our wishes - we shouldn’t feel compelled to vote millions of dollars and precious American lives to garrison their country any longer. The job is done.

The other day, when I read they voted "no" to an increase, I told my husband we should just say, "Fine. See, ya! And by the way, here's our bill for services rendered!"

The Iraqi’s have said , and I expect they’ll say again, that they need us to train their camelkissingdumbasses. I’m OK with that. I helped a little with the Shah’s runts way back when and we’ve done it with many others. But if that’s what they want then I say send them over. We have great places to bring up 12 century goat herders like, oh, say, Ft. Bragg, Camp Lejuene, Ft Lewis, Great Lakes, Camp Pendleton, et al. Get them away from their Mommas and sisters, teach them how to shave and use/clean a flush terlet, and otherwise “grow them up “ so they have a fighting chance of functioning in the 20th century. The Iraq’s have oil money now-—let them pay for it. And by the way-—we need to remind them that they made us come there twice to bail their buttz out——don’t make us come back again because we’re coming with the glass maker.

Let’s start getting some lucrative oil contracts and I’m on board.

Iraq is a very important frontline against terrorist sponsoring Iran and Syria, with possible access to airports for large movements of troops for a possible war. It is also assumed to be second largest oil exporting country in the coming years, if not first, and is very important for the US economy. In political terms, it will also be the frontline to challenge dictatorship and spread democracy within the region, as one of the solutions to weaken potential enemieis of US and Israel. I believe isolationism and anti-war is a liberal ideology, and is alien from conservative ideas. Let us have bases in Iraq to gain access anytime to crush Iran and Syria supporting Islamism and Al Qaida, and spread democracy throughout the Middle East to pacify the region, which would also protect access of energy exports of the region. Iraq is always vulnerable to fall under the hands of Iran, which will give free access to Syria on ground, and flood Israel with full of terrorists.

I disagree. They're next-door neighbors to a board-certified Axis of Evil (AoE) leader in the mullahs' regime. We keep a significant combat force in Korea for the same reason, and a similar consideration should guide us here.

There's no reason permanently to station four divisions in Iraq or anything like that, but a rightsized force, intelligently deployed (hard for the jihadis to get to, without our seeing 'em coming 10 miles off) and reasonably well dug-in, might be a useful counter to anything the mullocracy might try to pull.

I'm sure the Pentagon has redrawn the force structure two or three times since 1989, but it's always worth a fresh look.
