75% Support Showing Photo ID At The Polls
Rasmussen Reports ^ | June 9, 2011 | Scott Rasmussen

Posted on 06/09/2011 11:31:48 AM PDT by Hojczyk

Support remains high for requiring voters to show photo identification before being allowed to cast their ballots. An increasing number of states across the country are putting that requirement into law.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 75% of Likely U.S. Voters believe voters should be required to show photo identification such as a driver’s license before being allowed to vote. Just 18% disagree and oppose such a requirement. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

Eighty-five percent (85%) of Republicans support a photo ID requirement at the polls, as do 77% of voters not affiliated with either major party and 63% of Democrats. But then support for such a law is high across virtually all demographic groups.

Supporters of photo ID laws say they will prevent fraud at the polls; opponents insist the laws will discourage many including minorities and older Americans from voting.

By a 48% to 29% margin, voters think that letting ineligible people vote is a bigger problem than preventing legitimate voters from casting a ballot.

A plurality (46%) of Democrats thinks it’s more common for eligible voters to be denied their right to vote. Seventy-two percent (72%) of Republicans and a plurality (44%) of voters not affiliated with either party, on the other hand, believe that illegal voting is more prevalent.

Having to prove who you are. What a novel concept.

How tough is it, really, to get a photo ID? My mother is 89, hasn't driven in five years and we still managed to get her one. Legally.

I would suppose the other than 75% are either clueless or think voter fraud is just fine.

Absolutely. This should be a top priority.

oh....so 75% of Americans are racist now?

Didn’t Debbie Whatshername Slutz just say that republicans really want to keep democrats from voting?

Polls? What happens when you have all mail-in ballots?

There is no excuse for this not being done all over America. Corrupt, ignorant politicians. No matter whether Democrats, Republicans, or any other. It is corruption of the worst description of rats that are supposed to represent us and a Constitutional protection of the vote.

75% agreed while 18%, using translators no doubt, disagreed.

Don't you just wish they would put something like this on a national ballot and the majority rules....kind of like it use to be before those in the minority would cry crocodile tears in front of some idiot judge who would overrule the wish of the majority.

Doesn't make sense to me either.

Just some wild guesses...

1. people will be intimidated by the process and when asked for an ID. I presented my drivers license last time I “walk-in” voted. I have voted mail-in for several years since then. Seems like mail-in has a bigger risk of fraud.

2. people are pretty irresponsible and may forget to get an ID.

The idea — voting should be as simple and convenient as possible. OTOH: there is the risk of cheating.

The other 25% is worried about losing their “right” to vote 3 times.

I'd like to see a GOP member in Congress introduce a bill that invalidates the electoral votes for any state that doesn't require ID in a presidential election.

75% public support is a mandate, so use that hammer, GOP!

When the Iraqi's first did that during the 2004 elections, I thought, "nan, what a ingenious idea!" Of course something like that would be considered an egregious infringement on a liberal's inalienable right to vote repeatedly in this country and would be subject immediately to numerous ACLU lawsuits. I for one am all for using an indelible ink or better yet a stain like methylene blue (it will not completely wash off no matter what the solvent, as anyone who has worked in a chemistry or microbiology lab will attest; it has to wear off) to mark you so you could not vote again.

"Vote early......and often!".......William Hale Thompson, who surprisingly was a CHICAGO Mayor.

When the identical poll was run, but multiple voting was permitted, the result was that 75% oppose requiring IDs and 25% support it, with five times as many votes overall...

Why there isn’t near unanimity(only 85%)in support for voter ID among Republicans is a mystery to me. There alway seems to be a consistent 10-20% of Republicans in a variety of polls on various issues that have radical Leftist positions-including some polls that show Republican support for 0bama of around 10%.

What happens when you have all mail-in ballots?

That is where the real fraud is now being done. Acorn registers lots of people, many of whom are phony or not legitimate, and the democrats fill out mail in ballots for all those folks and mail them in to vote for them. There needs to be limits and verifications on mail in ballots.
