Senators Try to Revive Bipartisan Spirit (Mark Kirk calls W.Va. Dem his "main man")

While Democrats and Republicans talk shop in partisan lunches throughout the week, Sens. Mark Kirk and Joe Manchin look forward to their weekly lunch date.

In a throwback to a more bipartisan era, the Illinois Republican and West Virginia Democrat have, for more than two months, met for a little cross-party chitchat. They’ve invited colleagues to join them. So far, few have.

It’s an oft-told story, but the Kirk-Manchin lunches are a reminder that Congress is no longer the bipartisan place it used to be. Aside from a few basketball games in Congressional gyms and the weekly bipartisan prayer breakfasts, Members have few opportunities to strike up friendships across the aisle.

The two freshmen started the lunch meetings in March for this very reason. They began meeting in the often-deserted Senate Room 113, a small dining area which staff sets daily with white tablecloths, glasses and silverware.

“It was like a museum piece: Set up every day for Members that never showed up,” Kirk said. “My main man Manchin and I have adopted that room on Thursdays.”

Never heard of Joe Manchin. Is he as queer as Kirk?

Since Sen. Kirk was my congressman, I’m not surprised that he likes a Democrat, since Kirk is more liberal than many Democrats. His latest rating from Planned Parenthood is 100%, and his latest rating from Gun Owners of America is 0%.

Perhaps this small, vindictive President has something to do with the ill will abroad in our nation’s capital.
Attacking the Supreme Court seated in front of the podium during his first State of the Union address was a staggering display of mean-spirited behavior. Inviting Paul Ryan to his non-budget budget address, only to rip into Ryan’s debt-reduction plan was another. No wonder only the clueless Kirk thinks it’s a swell idea to offer oneself as a punching bag for the likes of Obama, Reid, and Pelosi.

This is the same Mark Kirk who says (a few posts earlier) that if the Democrats won’t put through more fetal stem cell research, then he will.

Regretably, another Commie Republican.

Is he now saying that Joe Manchin is his new boyfriend? Kind of odd. Even queer.

There seems to be a stupid epidemic in the Senate. It seems to me that rather than bi-partisan RINOs we have I’ll just bend over and grab my ankles RINOs!

This article, oddly, and strangely, sums up, pretty much everything thats been wrong with congress over the years.

If business leaders did this, from different companies, we'd try to throw their rear ends in jail.....go figure.

Hope Manchin doesn’t catch anything from Kirk. You know like a virus or something....

Is there already a Mrs. Manchin? Does she (?) know about this? Do West Virginia voters know about this?

Hey, this’ll be the hottest WV-IL matchup since Jay Rockefeller married Chuck Percy’s progeny. I wonder where they’re registered ?

Is anyone else struck by the fact that the average IQ of a US Senator seems to hover around the 80 or 90 mark? There is a definite disconnect with their constitutional role and their intellectual abilities/gifts which seem to allow them to get dressed in the morning but very little else. And truth be told with some of them you really wonder if someone else dresses them.

Or in the case of Wiener, forget to get dressed at all (yet they manage to meticulously wax their generals).

Yup. Good for us is the fact that the DSCC Chair for this cycle is Patty Murray who by all accounts is borderline illiterate.
