If GM had died as so many on this board wished, hoped and prayed for, and if Ford had died as many others as well hoped for, all of the transplants would pack up and leave the United States. The Japanese Car companies really don't want to be in the United States. They would much rather build cars in Japan and ship them to the US. It was only policies set forth in the Reagan administration that forced the Japanese to Manufacture (really assemble) in the US.
Without the leverage of Ford and GM, the transplants would move back to Japan very quickly and we would have no auto industry. Even the Germans and the Koreans would leave as well.

Tell that nonensense to the folks here in the USA building Toyotas by the thousands. The cars are not just assembled here. The Toyota Camry is the most American content car available
