~ Hall of Heroes ~The Traveling Memorial Wall
Info from here. |
|
On Memorial Day I was blessed to be able to take my kids to see the Traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall and pay respects to the men who gave their lives in Vietnam. I took some pictures and wanted to share them with you - I hope you will forgive the departure from our normal threads. These men are all heroes. They were someone's son, father, brother, uncle, nephew - they were real people with real lives and real hopes and real dreams. If you're like me, sometimes you sort of forget that - or at least don't think about it. Let's just take a moment and remember... |
She was taking a picture of a name with her cell phone. I had to explain to my kids - especially the younger ones - that the things that they saw as trash were really memorials. My little guy wanted to clean up the cigarette packs - he thought someone had littered.
If you get the chance, I highly recommend a visit to the real wall in Washington D.C. And if the traveling wall comes to your town, it's worth a trip to see it and remember the heroes who died for our country.
|
242 men received the Medal of Honor for their actions in the Vietnam war. You can read about them in this free e-book, Medal of Honor Vietnam.
(Click the picture to read the book.) |
The Statler Brothers - More Than A Name On A Wall (click to listen) I saw her from a distance As she walked up to the wall in her hand she held some flowers as her tears began to fall and she took out pen and paper as to trace her memories and she looked up to heaven and the words she said were these...
She said Lord my boy was special, and he meant so much to me and Oh I'd love to see him just one more time you see All I have are the memories and the moments to recall
So Lord could you tell him, He's more than a name on a wall..
She said he really missed the family and being home on Christmas day and he died for God and Country in a place so far away
I remember just a little boy playing war since he was three But Lord this time I know, He's not coming home to me
And she said Lord my boy was special, and he meant so much to me and Oh I'd love to see him But I know it just can't be So I thank you for my memories and the moments to recall
But Lord could you tell him, He's more than a name on a wall...
Lord could you tell him, He's more than a name on a wall...
Carolyn Dawn Johnson - Some Mother's Son (click to listen) She lays awake in a silent room Holding his picture washed silver by the moon Oceans away, he feels her sigh So alone in the world tonight Freedoms needs a soldier, the nameless faceless one A young girl's lover, a baby's father, some mother's son To young to know his daddy's gone He hears him say she must be strong So he pretends, like children do He likes to stand in his daddy's shoes Freedom needs a soldier, the nameless faceless one A young girl's lover, a baby's father, some mother's son Yeah freedom needs a soldier until the battle's won A young girl's lover, a baby's father, some mother's son She closes her eyes and sees him at three In her mind that's the age he'll always be And only God understand her love And now she prays to the angels up above Freedom needs a soldier, the nameless faceless one A young girl's lover, a baby's father, some mother 's son Freedom needs a soldier, until the battle's won A young girl's lover, a baby's father, some mother's son
To all the Vietnam Vets out there who might read this... |
Please remember the Canteen is here to honor, support and entertain our troops and their families. This is a politics-free zone! Thanks for helping us in our mission! |

Hiya Ladies and thanks for tonight's Canteen!
STAR, this is by far the best Canteen thread I have ever read and there have been a lot of good ones!
For those of us who served in Vietnam and made it home safely, I feel blessed.
For those of my Brothers who never made it home, I feel nothing but grief and sorrow, still to this day, 40 years later!
Thanks again!

Good evening, mom...it took about 7 weeks, but the meds finally started working. Except for sleeping, or lack thereof, he can do most everything he had been doing. He’s even driving a little. I do have to keep a close eye to make sure he takes all his meds.
Hope all is well with you and yours. ((HUGS))

Evening Brothers!
I've never made it to the Vietnam Wall in D.C., have you?
I'm going to look and see if the travelling Wall is coming my way, it was here a few years ago, but I couldn't make it.

I’ve seen the travelling wall 3 or 4 times and the original once. Brings tears to this cynical rednecks eyes each time. God bless them all.

I am so happy that the medications are starting to work. Hopefully, a sound sleep can be remedied or come on its own. Things are okay here... everyone happy, and healthy. God bless!

As I was walking Linda this morning, there was an older gentleman on his knees on the lawn, pulling out weeds. I commented to him about the weeds, and noticed that on his car he had two stickers. One said “VIETNAM VET” and the Other, “KOREAN WAR VET”.
I asked if that was Him. He said yes.
I thanked him for his service, and told him my Dad was a veteran of WW2 and Korea.
I would have been in that one too, he said, but I was too young.
My eyes filled up.

Aloha Army Bro!
Never got to Foggy Bottom to see the Wall and I don't think that the traveling wall was ever shipped over here, not even to Pearl.
Truthfully, I have mixed feelings about visiting.
