You can't make this up. A Missouri man, presumably trying to make a living in the era of Hope and Change, has been fined more than twice the cost of a Chevy Volt for illegally selling rabbits. John Dollarhite says he didn't know a federal license was required and, even if he had known, probably wouldn't have foreseen the blindsiding of the 8th amendment by the Department of Agriculture. To wit:
Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishment inflicted.
Ninety grand? For those without a calculator, that's the reported profit in question ($200) x 450. Which begs another question: Why is the federal government policing Missouri's rabbits? The 10th amendment reads:
The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.
Is "rabbit licensing" delineated in Article. 1. Section. 8.? It is not. What's delineated is "commerce among the several States," a concept so over-blown and absurdly extrapolated that America has become a soft tyranny.
This is not excessive.
Just ask the people imposing the fine...
Sorry, John - you didn’t get the permission of the local Commissar.
That’s a no-no in the Era of Premier Hussein.
With local and state governments financially strapped, look for some real interesting fine amounts and fine frequency in the near future, especially traffic infractions. It’s stealth taxation.
Oh-Oh, I raise rabbits for meat, mostly for my own use but I do have a market for all of my excess bunnies. I sell about 20 to 30 a month to a single buyer, he takes them live so I don’t have to process.
The way the laws were explained to me was that I am able to sell them to any buyer, but that buyer cannot resell without further authorization/inspection.
Rabbit fryers, weighing between 4.5 to 5 lb., are bringing $5.50 per lb. wholesale right now. Larger rabbits bring a little less.
Guess I had better watch myself.
From my cold, greasy hands..................
I think I finally figured this one out.
Rabbits are tasty, and apparently easy to raise, but you never see any in the meat section of your average grocery store (if you’re lucky you might find some in frozen meats).
The cattlemen, chicken and pig farmers don’t want the competition and have enough pull with the USDA to clamp down anyone who want to raise and sell rabbits.
Do not sell to a pet store or you will be toast,
Wonder if Michael Moore will screen Roger & Me for these Feds.
“Pets or Meat”
By some fat guy from Detroit ???
You have to understand the premise behind these absurd enforcement procedures -
it’s an outright WAR on self-reliance.
When they bring the hammer down, they want as few people as possible to slip their nets.
This is where the bureaucracies need to be dismantled and eliminated.
This is where our freedoms are lost.
That’s why I started raising them to start with, right before Obama was elected. I could see hard times coming.
I wonder how they will look at my greenhouse, garden, fish pond, and goats?
I'm planning to start with rabbits later this year, but I'm going to give the excess offspring away in trios, to get as many people raising rabbits as I can.
My libinlaw hangs out with a lot of lefties, and keeps up on the catchphrases and the “insert this into conversation” buzzwords. As an example, one day, as a complete non-sequitur, she inserted into the conversation that “10% of the population are homosexual”.
When I’d described the failing economy and the reasons to have some supplies/food on hand for emergencies, she said “if the economy collapses, we’ll all be in the same boat, so there’s no reason to do any of that”.
I think I see what is trickling through the leftist grapevine - they want to FORCE us all into “the same boat”.
We’re easier to control that way.
“greenhouse/fishpond” -
have you looked into aquaponics? Really cool combination of fish farming and hydroponics in one system.
.
Great, I have done the same many times. Brothers and sisters are no-no’s though and mother’s and sons aren’t good for your herd either. Fathers, uncles are ok.
You might get together with the people you gave the bunnies to occasionally to swap does or use the service of a buck. It will keep your herd healthy and lees prone to genetic disease.
I raise New Zealand Whites myself. A great rabbit for meat. I’m going to experiment with a cross with a Californian if I can find a buck. I have sampled some of that product and found it appealing.
As a matter of fact, I am beginning a major solar project at my place this year including the greenhouse. It is only 10’ X 20’ but it is very tall with a steep roof. Hydroponics is definately on agenda, but aquaponics is new to me. Google here I come, and thanks for the tip!
In a nutshell:
Feed the fish, pump their waste off the bottom of the tank, run it through your hydroponic system to clean the water & feed the plants, drain back into the fish tank.
Harvest the fish, harvest the plants, rinse and repeat.
