Two agencies have offered rewards for information in connection with the slaying of a Bexar County Sheriff's Office sergeant ambushed on the East Side early Saturday.

Sgt. Kenneth Vann, 48, was en route to a call for a shooting around 2 a.m. Saturday, when a small white car pulled up next to his marked patrol car at a red light at Loop 410 and Rigsby Avenue, officials said.

Shots were fired — likely from a high-caliber semiautomatic weapon, according to Bexar County officials — out of the white car's front passenger window. Bullets struck the passenger-side windows of Vann's patrol car, killing him, officials said.

SNIP

San Antonio police and the U.S. Marshals Service are helping the sheriff's office investigate the murder, and those agencies along with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Texas Department of Public Safety and the FBI staffed a mobile command post in a nearby Walmart parking lot. By Sunday morning, the post had been disassembled.

Crime Stoppers and the U.S. Marshals are offering rewards totaling $10,000 for information regarding the fatal shooting, and tipsters are asked to please call Crime Stoppers at 210-224-7867 or the sheriff's office, 210-335-6000.

Why is the FBI getting involved? I think people overall are just sick and tired of the federal government and state control. Is the FBI going to investigate the Sheriffs department that gunned down the Marine hero?

An “initiation rite” killing by a drug lord wannabe?

It’s past time for Congress to declare war on Mexico. Contact your representative today and let them know the utter failure of Mexico’s ruling elite to control (a) years and years of illegal alien border-jumping by the millions; and (b) unrestrained violence on American soil by Mexican drug cartels, together represents a “clear and present danger” to the sovereignty of the United States, and that as an American you are demanding that the federal government honor its Constitutional obligation to defend the U.S.from all enemies foreign and domestic. Or there will be a recall to strip every member of Congress from their seat, and the people WILL elect representatives who have the courage to defend what is rightfully theirs.

The ambushed and murdered Sherrif Sergeant was a Marine who served in Desert Storm.

In addition to his outstanding service to Bexar County, do you think he might also qualify as a hero?

Whoa the big guy. I’m all for the government keeping it’s noes out of my paycheck and other things, but when a cop goes down, I want the hammers of hell to come down on the bad guys. Cops male mistakes too and the full story of that other occurrence hasn’t been told, but the last thing I want are people feeling free to take out cops.

Only if it's a non hispanic drug lord wannabe. That is the black area of town. In fact, many blacks in SA are saying publicly they pray the shooter wasn't black.

Did it ever occur to you that the San Antonio PD may just want all the help they can get and that’s why many different agencies are assisting?

The FBI assists in LEO murders all over the country if asked for assistance.

If my brother was a cop who was shot late at night, I wouldn’t care a wit that the FBI got involved. Seriously, a cop is dead. I want big brother to help. Why do you think they’re involved in the first place? Might be something more serious than just local stuff.

My neighbor is FBI and some if the stuff he hints at scares the shit out of me. He was involved in the Jeff Dahmer hunt before it became public. Just a few murders and so should they have been involved in that one? I’m guessing they have a bigger issue here, but what do I know. I’ll stick with the ‘my brother’ issue and be perfectly comfortable with big brother helping out.

Well I an very critical and do not trusts federal government agencies. Congrats on living next to a narc. You know the police and feds can search your house without warrants in indiana? You know they can take your bionetric data without consent or a warrant? Finally did you know they can look into your house with infrared, and thermo imagery? Tell your neighbor he’s part of the new age gestapo.

Hmmm.” when a small white car pulled up next to his marked patrol car at a red light at Loop 410 and Rigsby Avenue, officials said.” “Shots were fired out of the white car’s front passenger window. Bullets struck the passenger-side windows of Vann’s patrol car”. What lanes would these two cars have to be in and in what direction would these two cars have to travelling for the shots to have been fired out of the white car passenger side window and through the patrol car passenger-side window?

pulled up next to his marked patrol car

out of the white car's front passenger window. Bullets struck the passenger-side windows

I'm having trouble picturing what happened. When I read 'pulled up beside' I was thinking the cars were aimed the same direction. But if it is 'out passenger side, in passenger side', the shooter would have to be in the oncoming lane between the cop and the curb - something the cop would have surely noticed happening and which would have put him on his guard.

The official story just doesn't make sense, and needs to be massaged.

I'm having trouble picturing what happened.

For good reason. Good catch and good, close reading, guys. I missed it, because I had read an earlier story.

Chief Deputy Sheriff Manuel Longoria said Vann was responding to a call for an accidental shooting in eastern Bexar County. He had stopped for a red light in the left westbound lane on Rigsby, just east of the Loop 410 overpass, "when someone rolls up on his right and just opens up, firing multiple shots."

The bullets shattered the front and rear passenger windows. Authorities said they were not sure how many bullets were fired; Longoria said numerous spent cartridges were recovered around the shot-out cruiser.

Bexar deputy is shot to death at traffic light

If a passenger in the white car did the shooting, he did it across the driver or from the backseat. Since the rear passenger window was shot out, I think the shooting was done from the backseat, or else the shooter's car was not paralell to the cruiser.

The journalist and editor (and I) responsible for this story obviously did not pay as close attention as did you guys. :-)
