Russia's Winter Olympics slips into controversy over 'Nazi images'
Guardian ^ | 5-16-11 | Tom Parfitt

A promotional campaign linked to the 2014 Winter Olympics is stirring debate in Russia because of its use of allegedly "fascist" imagery.

The campaign employs images of blue-eyed, blond sportsmen and women which have been described by critics as "neo-Hitlerite" and "like something from a Leni Riefenstahl film".

Images of an Aryan-looking snowboarder and an ice-skater gazing into the middle distance dominate giant billboards in Moscow and feature on the cover of brochures to advertise Gorky Gorod, an elite housing complex being built at Krasnaya Polyana near Sochi on Russia's Black Sea coast. The complex is a private-public partnership which will be the Olympic media village at the 2014 Games.

When the billboards were put up, the Russian art collective Voina, itself known for its controversial painting of a 65-metre penis on a drawbridge in St Petersburg, tweeted: "On Pushkinskaya Square opposite Gap, there is a huge advertisement, openly fascist in style, for elite housing in Sochi."

The Guardian has learned that the images of the sportsmen were produced by Doping-Pong, a St Petersburg-based design company which uses a swastika as one of its online "banners".

One of the company's recent projects is a series of erotic photographs of two young women, one called a "fa" (fascist), the other an "antifa" (anti-fascist activist), who grapple with each other in a wrestling ring and tear off each other's clothes. The "fa" appears to win the fight and triumphantly wraps herself in a Nazi flag.

Doping-Pong also works closely with Katya Zashtopik, a Russian artist in her 20s and who uses the online avatar Dopingirl.

On 20 April, Adolf Hitler's birthday, she published a yellow "smiley" on her blog embellished with a toothbrush moustache and a slick of black hair. The caption read: "Happy Birthday."

Salient paragraph:

Just a bit homoerotic.

Note to Putin:

Please use small, fat Negroes in the next Olympic Poster Series. We must have some somewhere. If not, call the United States EEOC and get some diversity candidates.

Priority: TOP!

Blue eye blonds are still evil these days? The journalists at Guardian thinks that the Russians should have white guilt and be ashamed of their culture just like the rest of Western Europe.

Yawn. So, don’t go if you are so easily offended by White people...

The Winter Olympics have always been derogatorily called “The Aryan Games”, by racists who moan about the lack of athletes of “color” participating in them.

The was little real difference between the Nazis and Bolsheviks; one ideology had some kooky ideas about race, the other some kooky ideas about class. But other than that, they were pretty much the same thing.

However, were I a Russian, I’d be offended, not by the images Doping-Pong created, but by her obvious Nazi sympathies. I’m sure I’d have had a lot of family members killed by guys wearing swastikas on their uniforms, acting directly under orders of the guy with the toothbrush mustache.

"like something from a Leni Riefenstahl film".

This is bad?

Riefenstahl's politics may have been a bit suss, but Olympia is a masterpiece.

Is there going to be a memo: "Hey guys, whatever you do, don't be as good as the Nazis"?

My ex-Father in Law was a Ukrainian in WWII and when the Nazis overran his little village he saw nothing about the Nazis that he didn't like.

He hated two groups: Russians and Jew. He still does to this day.

The ukrainians may have initially felt relief at the Germans coming (after the millions dying of starvation due to the Soviets) but the Nazis were barbaric in the Ukraine, utterly, utterly barbaric.

Most east Europeans would have welcomed the Nazis as liberators, if they had posed as such. There was at least one SS Division composed of Russian PoWs and they could have recruited a volunteer army in the Ukraine and another in the Baltic.

If only they had treated the occupied parts of the Soviet Union, as they did Holland or France, the Nazis win the war. The Red Army would have collapsed as relatively few would have been willing to fight for Stalin.

also, from the Russians I meet, my observation is that 60% or more are dark haired, dark eyes (brown more than black). The Germans are the same

There are far more blue-eyed blondes among Poles, West Ukrainians and Białorussians. a larger % are among Estonians and Swedes and lesser among Danes.

Yes. If images of human beings are some sort of provocation, actual calls for genocide can't be far off.
