JL: I would love to see more people, especially young people, get involved in this whole issue of trying to demonize the Latino population. Too many of our brothers and sisters are being racially profiled because of their background, last name or the language they may speak. The state of Georgia is copying the state of Arizona, and I think there will be other states to follow the same path. When you take on the immigrant population, you're taking on all of us.
During the Freedom Rides, we were saying, in effect, you arrest one of us, you're going to arrest all of us. You beat 15 or 20 of us, then you're going to have to beat more than 400 of us. I see parallels between then and now. There must be a real movement to resist this attempt to say that people who come from another land are not one of us.
The Root: There are theories that pushing for integration was the wrong thing to do -- that if your generation had instead fought harder for "separate but equal," then African Americans would have more self-determination and power. How do you respond to that argument?
JL: I happen to believe that our society must move toward the creation of a truly multiracial democracy -- that we're one people, one family, one house. As Dr. King would put it, we must learn to live together as brothers and sisters or we perish as fools. I would love to see the day come when we can lay down the burden of race and just be human.

I lived in Switzerland for 7 years, and I can assure you even though they rely on foreign workers to supplement the workforce in factories and the hotel and restaurant industry, they are NOT giving Swiss citizenship away.

Even worse they try to convince people that THEIR vision is correct, however I digress. They are totally wrong when they say that immigration is the "new civil rights movement". This is soooo wrong on soooo many levels that I will just attribute it to natural fuzzyhead thinking by those pointed headed intellectuals. I really don't think Diane Nash got on the bus 50 years ago so later union teachers in government schools could have guaranteed job regardless of their performance or that border jumpers could get free medical treatment and if anyone TELLS you that make them put the PIPE down...
The real heirs to the Civil Rights Movement is the TEA PARTY!!! The original Civil Rights Movement wanted the Constitution respected and its rule of law enforced! What does the Tea Party want? We want the Constitution enforced and our traditions respected. They both are very spiritual if not out right religious. Both employed non-violence. The CRM was first ignored by Federal Government and abused by state and local officials, the Tea Party is ignored by state and local officials (at their peril) and is abused by WH and media. Its not a perfect analogy but we are a "grass roots" movement of people fed up with oppression.
We have evolved from White Supremacy to Leftist Ascendency, (I want to see some academic talk about that on TV), but the tactics of the oppressor have gotten more subtle thats all. No fire hose or snarling hounds, we have Keith Olberdork and Rachel Madcow...

Congressman ...couldn’t agree more. Every time an illegal sucks up hospital care on my ticket, kills behind the wheel of a motor vehicle in my state, and sucks a legitimate job away from someone living down the street from me...We the People ARE indeed violated of our civil rights.
