The new bulbs will also be expensive -- about $50 each -- so the development may not prevent consumers from hoarding traditional bulbs.

Did you know that there's a 3 page guide on the proper steps to clean up a broken CFC light bulb. 3 pages for crying out loud.

WARNING--WARNING--THREAD HIJACKING IN PROGRESS:
Hate the twisty bulbs? ESLs coming soon This product just got UL approval, expect it to show up for retail sales soon. Whats an ESL? Think of it as an unfocused Cathode Ray Tube or CRT. The definition at Wikipedia is: Electron Stimulated Luminescence (ESL) is light produced by accelerated electrons hitting a phosphor (fluorescent) surface in a process known as cathodoluminescence. The light generation process is similar to a cathode ray tube (CRT) but lacks magnetic or electrostatic deflection.
Excerpt.

Dumb headline.
If the LED bulbs consumed 100 watts, there’d be no reason to replace 100 watt incandescents.
But... we’ve grown so used to measuring the light output in watts instead of lumens that they had to make the comparison this way.

Attention, House GOP....
One of the reasons we voted for you last fall was to repeal this damned ban.
So repeal the damned ban!
Either Obama or Harry Reid will stop it, but that’s okay, let them take the hit.
At $50.00 for each LED bulb, people may well hoard INCANDESCENT bulbs to sell AFTER January 1, 2012.

This reminds me, I need to get to Lowes and stock up on incadescents! I’ve got 23 different light bulbs through my house and about a 3 year stockpile so far.

What would happen if I dropped a box of these in Home Depot and they shattered into pieces?
Would the store have to be evacuated & Hazmat called.
To: scooby321
If the ban takes effect, can we buy them from other countries?
Oh, I also need a 3 or 5 gallon flush toilet. Where do I get one of those "illegally".

$50 each They can stick 'em where the lightbulb don't shine.

If/when these are as good as promised (and I’m eager to have LEDs for landscape lighting - malibu and MR-16 projectors - that is on for a lot of hours every day) market demand will take care of things, not bans.
But you know that greenie socialists will pretend that their bans caused this to be developed.

For what it's worth, and not that anyone cares, I've hoarded enough incandescents to last for several years, until LED technology improves enough to bring down prices. (BTW, my local KMart has 8 packs of Sylvania bulbs in all flavors including 100W on sale. Dunno if its a national offer, or not.)
I replaced one hard-to-get-at bulb at my parent's house with an LED bulb some time ago. So far, it's working great. I'm not expecting to need to replace it ever again. And, if the new bulb saves my Dad from teetering on top of a ladder, perched on a chair, perched on a stack of phone books, because he "doesn't want to be a bother and call me to change it" ..... then frankly I don't care what it costs.
But, I'd say that, at 20 bucks or so a pop, they're not yet ready for prime-time, quite yet. Hopefully in a few years.

I seem to recall that Tesla used electroluminescence for stage lighting with huge panels unconnected by wires.
That was in 1905.

LED bulbs will likely go on sale next year, but after a government ban takes effect
Of course, because the free market won't support them without massive government interference.

Stock up on light bulbs NOW while they are 40 cents per, our climate change masters of both parties will leave us with this $40 per bulb option. That's only X100 the cost, who can complain?
Thanks Bush/Pelosi for the help!

LED bulbs put out an ugly glare at higher wattages. I’ll stick with the regular incandescents for as long as I can. Last I checked, Arizona Home Depot stores still sell them. Will need to stock up next time I’m there.
