The Republican party has several factions ~ just like the Democrats, or any other party in a "first past the post" voting system with single member districts.

The way you advance in Republican politics is you get in a faction and you stick with it.

Your advancement in the ranks takes place OUTSIDE of the party structure ~ for the Democrats any advancement in the ranks takes place only WITHIN the party structure.

It's a subtle difference ~ but it's very real.
