If he thought he was immune they never would have had to drag him off a plane. He knew he was guilty and not immune. He departed the hotel in such haste that he forgot his cell phone. His mistake was to call the hotel and ask if he'd left it. That's apparently how they knew he was at JFK in time to grab him minutes before departure.
