Computer glitch forces redo of US visa lottery
AP/Stamford Advocate ^ | 5/13/11 | Matthew Lee

The State Department says its annual worldwide lottery for U.S. immigration visas was corrupted by a computer glitch and the results will be scratched, disappointing tens of thousands of would-be immigrants who were notified this year that they had won a chance to come and live legally in the United States.

A department official said Friday the software glitch caused the drawing to select 90 percent of winners from entries submitted on only the first two days of the 30-day registration period that ended Nov. 3. The official said the problem has been fixed. A new lottery will be held with winners announced on July 15.

Okay, color me uninformed. This is actually decided by a lottery? What happened to “waiting in line”? Does the length of time you’ve been waiting, or the country from which you’re trying to flee, have any bearing on who gets a visa?

Too bad you didn't win, you screwed up, you trusted us.

Next time just overstay your visa or sneak across and we'll give you a free pass.

No sneaking needed. Change your name to Juan or Maria Gonzales, boldly stride across the border and defy anyone to deport you.

They are not the preferred mexican nationality. They can just go to hell.

Well, it doesn't seem to apply if you're coming from South of the border.

Actually, the lottery has been in place for a while. It was intended to increase "diversity" in the immigrants to the U.S. Just what we need.

For such a terrible, unworthy, racist, etc. etc. country, an awful lot of people want to come here. Obama’s work is not yet done.

Let me guess what the “glitch” was: Barry Soetoro was one of the winners...?

With 20 million Americans out of work and an anemic economy, why are bringing anybody here from outside?

This is a supplement to the normal visa process. A certain number of applicants from each designated country are randomly selected to receive a visa without having to have a sponsor in the US. They must still be cleared through the screening watchlists.

Well, it appears that no one in the State Dept I/T organization has heard of acceptance testing and review the results of the test to see if the code is performing as the system's requirements called for.
And these nuts want bigger, more expensive and intrusiveness hoisted on citizens.

The visa lottery is perhaps the most insane piece of our immigration policy.

Applicants from most countries can walk into a US Embassy and put their name in the hat. A certain number of names will be pulled at random and awarded a Green Card. This is doled out proportionally to various countries in order to keep the immigrant pool “diverse”. It was the brainchild of Teddy Kennedy as you might have guessed.

Applicants from large number of Muslim whackjob countries are eligible to enter. Interestingly, India and Mexico, two countries who actually have sent a number of productive immigrants here, are not (already too many immigrants from those places....not “diverse”)

Frankly I’d much rather re-allocate Yemen’s visa quota to either of those countries. This policy is insane and it has to end!

That still does not make sense, who was the bright one who started this process?

OK, Ted Kennedy began this idiotic process of the lottery; makes sense now. I they blame the rich for winning life’s lottery!
