Obama mocks Republican position on immigration
Associated Press ^ | 5-10-11 | DARLENE SUPERVILLE and ERICA WERNER

Delving anew into an explosive issue, President Barack Obama stood near the border with Mexico on Tuesday and declared it more secure than ever, trying to build pressure on Republicans to take on a comprehensive immigration overhaul—and eagerly working to show vital Hispanic voters that he is not the one standing in the way. Countering Republican calls to focus on border security before moving to a comprehensive overhaul, Obama said their demands have been more than met by his administration but "they'll never be satisfied."

He boasted of increasing border patrol agents, nearing completion of a border fence, and screening more cargo.

"We have gone above and beyond what was requested by the very Republicans who said they supported broader reform as long as we got serious about enforcement," Obama said. "But even though we've answered these concerns, I gotta say I suspect there are still going to be some who are trying to move the goal posts on us one more time."

"Maybe they'll need a moat," Obama said mockingly to laughter from the crowd. "Maybe they'll want alligators in the moat."

Trying to build public support for legislation congressional Republicans don't want to pass, Obama said: "The question is whether those in Congress who previously walked away in the name of enforcement are now ready to come back to the table and finish the work we've started."

When Democrats had control of the House, Senate and WH, why didn’t they do something then? The answer is easy.....they didn’t want to close the border.

we got serious about enforcement,"

How in the heck can he say that with a straight face? Perry repeatedly asks for more border agents because they cross with impunity minute by minute. This administration is not enforcing anything. And somebody needs to tell him alligators aren't native to the Rio Grande.

Shocking..........just about every single call to CSPIN was against the president and amnesty. One woman loved the speech. A school psychologist babbling about some illegal girl being depressed......

Made no sense but the host let her babble on.

No one is FOR the president’s plans.

How can the POTUS joke about such a serious matter?

Our Country has serious problems and he wants to tackle immigration?

And BTW, what has Obama done to help Americans today...white, black, brown, yellow or polk-a-dot?

Guess Gov. Perry had a sneak peak at this speech and decided not to experience the same treatment Paul Ryan received after acccepting an Obama invite.

>>Perry repeatedly asks for more border agents<<

Perry's nothing but a political animal. He’z frightened that getting sideways with the mexicans will hurt his aspirations of higher office.

Gov. Good Hairs primary responsibility is to protect the citizens of Texas by beefing up border and illegal enforcement on a state level. He has done little.

When Democrats had control of the House, Senate and WH, why didn’t they do something then? The answer is easy.....they didn’t want to close the border.

And neither do the Republicans.

At least the Democrats are honest about what they want. Unlike the Republicans that lie to our faces saying they're going to do something about illegal immigration when they want to keep the border just as open as the Democrats.

Too many business interests benefit from the cheap labor comming over the border, and BOTH the GOP and Democrats are in their pockets.

I'm madder at the GOP than at the Dems when it comes to illegal immigration.

Mr. President, has the number of illegal crossings been reduced to zero? No?

Then, respectfully, STHU.

The illegal girl can be depressed in Mexico where she can purchase illegal anti-depressants on the nearest street corner. I’m depressed knowing she’s here.

Funny how he only visits “blue” areas of Texas, isn’t it? I’d love to see him spout this garbage to a crowd in Wichita Falls.
