Romney's South Carolina hesitation
Politico ^ | May 8, 2011 | Ben Smith

Posted on 05/08/2011 12:10:54 PM PDT by greyfoxx39

The only Mormon in the South Carolina legislature is Alan Clemmons, a real estate lawyer from Myrtle Beach with a shiny bald head, natty suits, and a hyperactive Twitter feed.

Mormons make up about 2 percent of the U.S population, but they’re closer to 30 percent of the Republican presidential primary field, where two clean-cut, handsome, moderate, millionaire former governors — Romney and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman — appear to be seeking the nomination.

“This year will be very much like my election,” Gov. Nikki Haley told POLITICO. “It doesn’t matter whether you’re male or female or black or what your religion is.”

Many in Romney’s camp quietly disagree. His top aides, several allies said, view anti-Mormon views as a challenge in South Carolina, and it’s widely thought to be part of the reason he’s keeping the state at arm’s length.

-SNIP-

The most detailed statistical examination of polling on Mormonism was performed by an Australian academic, David Thomas Smith, who found in a draft paper published online last month that it was possible to statistically extract antipathy for Mormons from other views in public polling, and that “generalized feelings about Mormons are the single most important factor in evaluations of Romney, even more so than party identification or ideology.”

In an interview, though, Smith cautioned that the next race may not mirror the last.

“There’s probably more awareness both of the fact that he’s a Mormon and some of the policy position he’s had in the past – I don’t know which of those is going to be foremost in people’s mind,” he said.

A rather long article that in my opinion attempts to cast South Carolina Christians as bigots. See what you think.

IMO, the media is going to try and shut down anyone who criticizes Romney, the ONE they have chosen for the Republican candidate in 2012.

I think they are trying to innoculate the mormon candidates before the primary in the hopes that one or the other will be the easy target in the general election when the racist past of mormonism is used against him.

Note the mention of the Tea Party in the article...if Palin decides to run, you will again see the sexism card played.

Who are these "moderates" ? You have one who is a pathological liar, Socialist and proven party-killer, and another who is a liberal, a fraud, and an Emperor Zero handpuppet. They're running in the wrong party.

If a truly conservative Mormon comes along I will have no qualms about supporting them, but a RINO is a RINO no matter what else they claim to be.

With Reid and Romney as the most prominent LDS politicians, however, it doesn't look good for the Mormons.

Surely they can produce someone better than these turkeys!

Mitt ain't gonna git SC because he's too slick.

Sarah Palin,Michelle Bachman,Herman Cain or Allen West will be the winners here if they all decide to run.
The rest are either worn out re-runs or stuffed shirts.
In 2008,McCain took the military vote and Huckster the Born Agains (a huge chunk of the GOP in SC).
Allen West would get the military and Huck could still get a sizable segment of the Born Agains (but not as many as before cause a lot of them know him better now)—but the vast majority (a huge majority here) of the SC Tea Party GOP will go for the four listed above—which would,IMHO,give the state to either Allen West or Sarah Palin.
IF those two would run.
Mitt ain't even a consideration,Mormon or no.

Romney should get out of the GOP and become a Democrat. Not showing up in the bastion of the GOP was his last mistake and his middle name is “RINO” now.

Go away, Romney-—you are a DEMOCRAT.

Most if not all Conservatives I have talked to will not in any way shape or form vote for Romney if he runs. He is a big Government RINO and his religion does not influence my decision. Just look at his track record!!!

The Romney campaign playing the "persecution" card. A staple since the 1830's. The media playing along to demean conservatives and provide an attractive target for Zero.

I don’t think you’re in any danger of being pinged on that.

Maybe he ought to get all his relatives on stage who’ve served in the armed forces of the United States, since South Carolinians are very pro-military...

Will Romney enlist Harry Reid to defend him against media charges of religious bigotry?

Anyone who critizes Romney for his attacks
on Gov. Palin and her little children
is labeled a ‘bigot’.

Romney - attacker of women and children for the DNC.

It's not an issue of Mormonism - it's an issue of SOCIALISM!!!

ROMNEYCARE IS COMMIECARE IS OBAMACARE!

Romney is a dirtbag socialist sycophant willing to toss away personal freedom in favor of socialist political power. He is to be opposed as much as much as Stalin, Obama or Hillary Clinton...

Politico already knows that people who don;t vote for Romney are bigots. Just like people who didn’t vote for Obama are racists. They are just trying to add some window dressing to the frame of their argument.

Also I want to post this:

Wednesday, October 17, 2007

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Bob Jones III, chancellor of the Christian fundamentalist school named for his family, is endorsing Republican Mitt Romney for president.

Romney’s campaign confirmed Jones’ endorsement Tuesday.

“We’re proud to have Dr. Jones’ support and look forward to working with him to communicate Governor Romney’s message of conservative change to voters,” Romney spokesman William Holley said in a statement.

Winning Bob Jones III endorsement was HUGE in 2008. If anyone talked about Romney’s religion (and no one I heard did) that endorsement would have squashed their argument.
