Immigration Bill draws controversy ( Alabama law would give police authority to enforce

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Alabama lawmakers are close to passing an immigration bill that would crack down on illegal immigrants, but the bill does not come without controversy.

Guillermo Lumbreras manages a local Mexican restaurant and has been in the United States for more than a decade. He said current legislation aimed at immigration reform is not fair.

"It is discrimination. We just want to provide for our family and be productive citizens," said Lumbreras. "I am a hard worker, and take care of my family."

Immigration Bills have already passed the Alabama House and Senate.

They prohibit employers from knowingly hiring illegal immigrants, and both require local officials to enforce immigration laws.

The bills would require police to verify a person's immigration status if they are stopped for a traffic offense and can't produce a driver's license or passport.

The bills give police officers the authority to detain anyone they suspect of being an illegal immigrant.

Some Hispanics said it could make people afraid of the police.

"People, the Spanish, anywhere scare you know. But you know, have emergency, you no can call police for protection," said Angel Gutierrez.

Bill supporters said illegal immigrants in Alabama are costing taxpayers money and taking jobs from American citizens.

Jeannette Vasquez has owned a business in Mobile for around five years and said that's not true.

"Illegal or not, they are working jobs most people don't want. They pay very little, the hours are poor, the labor is hard," said Vasquez.

Securing the border is a federal job and they are best equipped to do it... even though they don’t. The feds are not equipped to do interior enforcement, even if they wanted to. State and local law enforcement are far better equipped to do this. It is they who show up at crime scenes, traffic stops, etc, not the feds.

I’m sick and tired of these knuckheads “fearing” for their safety.

Employer: Your resume looks good. May I see some identification to verify your right to work?

Illegal: Oh no. Don’t hurt me! PLEASE don’t hurt my family!!!

That is a crock. If you are here LEGALLY, you have nothing to fear.

Citizens OBEY the law and follow the rules. Line jumpers and border jumpers don't count...

Some police officer should seize his property, detain him and his family and deport them. He is an admitted illegal alien.

Amazing what is controversial. Enforcing the LAW is. Giving free educations and other benefits to ILLEGAL ALIENS is not.

Alice, welcome to Looking Glass Land.

If there weren't so many illegals (and legal immigrants) constantly adding to the labor supply and driving down wages, the jobs would pay more and be more attractive to citizens.

That’s why they “love” America. Let’s see, you’ve got “discrimination”, “racism”, affirmative action”, “lawsuits”, etc. You know, all those good things they don’t have in their own country.

Yes, we are no longer a nation of laws. The FEDS TURN THEY head when CA allows medical pot (which is still a controlled drug at the Fed Level), and turns it's eyes when arresting illegal aliens for minor infractions, BUT sues the state of AZ for attempting to enforce the law.

Alice in Wonderland indeedie.

FIRST - I would like some journalist to do a little research and see how many social safety net resources have been consumed by this interviewee and his employees.

SECOND, Some Hispanics said it could make people afraid of the police.
Be afraid, be very afraid. Your first step on OUR soil was breaking the law. Why should we NOT believe you are breaking the laws of this nation on a daily basis. You should be afraid.

THIRD - AL better get ready for a law suit from Holder and Obammy, just like they laid on we citizens of AZ last year. A STATE dare not go up against the Chicago thugs running the Fed Gov

That's because illegal aliens are being used as slaves. Conditions improve and some jobs get automated when there's a fair market.

Name another country IN THIS WORLD that deals with illegal immigrants as kindly as does the US.

I don’t think there is one and that’s why the US may cease to exist if this crap keeps up!
