BREAKING: CBS News obtains document linking asst. AG to ‘Gunrunner’
Seattle Gun Rights Examiner ^ | 4 May, 2011 | Dave Workman

Posted on 05/05/2011 5:45:24 AM PDT by marktwain

CBS News is reporting that documents obtained by Congressional investigators looking into the Project Gunrunner scandal include a wiretap authorization from Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer dated in March 2010.

Read the CBS story by investigative reporter Sharyl Attkisson here.

Also included in documents released by investigators is a January 8, 2010 “briefing paper” on Project Gunrunner from the Phoenix, AZ field division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The documents were released earlier today as the Senate Judiciary Committee convened for an oversight hearing on the Department of Justice.

One document indicates a Holder Asst. Attorney General, Lanny Breuer, authorized a wiretap in the controversial gun trafficking case headquartered in Phoenix. In that case, called "Fast and Furious," multiple sources say ATF allowed thousands of guns to hit the streets, destined for Mexican drug cartels.—CBS News

As reported by this column today, Attorney General Eric Holder professed considerable lack of knowledge about the Gunrunner operation, and its links to the slaying of Customs and Border Protection Agent Brian Terry last December. That prompted the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms to call for Holder’s resignation.

What Holder and Barry had in their gun sights was the Second Amendment.

Since the moment he got elected!

"In 1989, he joined the law firm of Covington & Burling LLP, where he worked until 1997, when he joined the White House Counsel’s Office as Special Counsel to President William Jefferson Clinton. As Special Counsel, Mr. Breuer assisted in defending President Clinton in the Senate impeachment trial." - From the DOJ Website

A Clintonista goes under the Obama/Holder Bus.

Reason: stoke Mexican drug cartel gun data in order to eliminate or severely constrain our 2nd amendment rights. The Obozo is so narcissistic that no project such as this would occur without his approval. No plausible deniability for this bunch.

While I don’t think anything will happen (live next to Illinois, and know how the Chicago gang plays), I am surprised this has appeared to grown some legs. Usually there is a suicide of a key witness by now.

This corroborates reports of Breuer involvement in the operation posted in early February by Mike Vanderboegh of Sipsey Street Irregulars and by Gun Rights Examiner.

“For when he was called upon to deal with the lawful request of ATF Mexico City attache Darren Gil to inform the Mexican authorities of the smuggled rifles of Project Gunwalker, Breuer overruled Gil.” Vanderboegh wrote on Feb. 4, prophetically adding:

Lanny Breuer …I hope to see you, your boss Eric Holder, and your culpable minions under oath at a Congressional hearing in the near future.

“A source who has been providing information that has consistently panned out in the ongoing ‘Project Gunwalker’ investigation is claiming that Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division of the Department of Justice, Lanny Breuer, was party to the decision to overrule the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosive’s representative to Mexico,” this column reported on Feb. 5.

While the CBS report focuses on a different aspect of the Gunwalker case, it confirms not only that Breuer had knowledge of Fast and Furious, but also that he was directly involved in decision-making and leadership on legal matters pertaining to the operation. With all of the other allegations reported early on by Vanderboegh and this correspondent that have since been corroborated by unfolding developments, questioning Breuer under oath will be an important step in uncovering the scope of the role he played.

I wonder how many Americans have been killed as a result of this. My guess is: More than we will ever know about.

I was thinking more along the lines of the computer analogy. Clean out the temp files clogging the system get rid of viruses and mal-ware, uninstall programs you don’t need anymore, and use your source code as the basis for restoring the system.

According to disclosure forms obtained by POLITICO, Lanny Breuer earned $2.4 million in the last two years as a defense lawyer representing clients including mortgage lender Freddie Mac, which was taken over by the government last year ; big pharmaceutical firms under Congressional investigation; Los Alamos National Laboratory in an investigation over alleged sharing of nuclear secrets with China; and a lobbying firm linked to Rep. Jerry Lewis (R-Calif.) that attracted federal scrutiny after Lewis earmarked millions for its clients.

And that’s not to mention his work for alleged steroid-using strikeout pitcher Roger Clemens, and alleged document-lifter and former National Security Advisor Sandy Berger.

It’s no surprise that Breuer, a partner at the power firm Covington & Burling who as a White House lawyer helped President Clinton through many an investigation, would be sought out by clients under the government microscope.

Breuer represented Canadian businessman Eugene Melnyk, who the Securities and Exchange Commission has charged with accounting fraud in connection with his time as the lead executive at drug-maker Biovail Corporation.

Also among his clients is Ipulasi Sunia, the lieutenant governor of American Samoa, who in 2007 was charged with fraud, bribery and obstruction for allegedly conspiring to rig government contracts.

The Wall Street Journal reported back in November:

U.S. District Court Judge Emmet G. Sullivan was not a happy man last August when he reluctantly approved a $298 million settlement that allowed Barclays Bank to avoid prosecution on charges that it violated U.S. economic sanctions.

He was downright angry Tuesday when he discovered the parties had not complied with a court order requiring them to file a report explaining bank’s progress in complying with the agreement.

“It’s inexcusable and it’s unacceptable,” said an incredulous Sullivan, who previously questioned the settlement as a “sweetheart deal.”

Breuer relishes his hardball image. When he was defending Clinton National Security Adviser Sandy “the Burglar” Berger who had been charged with stealing documents from the National Archives pertaining to the Clinton-era policy on Osama bin Laden (removing evidence before the 9/11 Commission could get their hands on it), Breuer attacked the honest but lowly National Archives employees, threatening: “I suggest that person is lying,” he said. “And if that person has the guts, let’s see who it is who made the comment that Sandy Berger stuffed something into his socks.”

Of course, Berger later plead guilty to just that, after the NA employees stuck by their stories. Still, Breuer was able to deflect the maximum punishment from Berger and the Clinton-era secrets remained just that, secret and now, lost to history.

Any other President, that had done as much unlawful acts as Obama has done since taking office, would have been impeached or forced to resign by now.

And which of those two possible outcomes were to happen depends on the political party of the President involved: 1) impeached if a democRAT or 2) forced to resign by his own party if a Republican.

If Sharyl Attkisson doesn’t get the Emmy for this, no one should. She has been all over this story for more than a month. And, you have to give CBS some credit - I haven’t seen this story reported on ANY other broadcast network.
